The School of Aviation offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including flying training and airborne research. The Flying Operations Unit, located at Bankstown Airport, delivers flying training and supporting theory as required by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and facilitates airborne research activities.

The Education Designer and Support Officer (Academic Calendar Transition) plays a key role in supporting the School of Aviation within the Faculty of Science in two key areas. Firstly, and as a priority, with the academic calendar transition from the existing ‘3+’ academic calendar model to a ‘flex-semester’ calendar, due to be implemented by 2028. Secondly, to assist academics with uplifting courses, through education design and support.

Embedded within the school and liaising closely with the Science Education Team (SET) and the School Manager, this role will support and provide expert advice relating to curriculum and timetable changes while liaising with academic and professional staff to ensure alignment between the School and faculty-wide initiatives.


About the role

  • Level 7 ($113k - $123k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 2 years
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to the School Manager and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Support the implementation of academic calendar transition activities at the School level.
  • Create timelines and track key deadlines related to calendar and curriculum transformation activities.
  • Develop a risk register for calendar transition-related impacts and support the development of local mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain documentation related to curriculum changes, assessment schedules, and teaching delivery. and liaise with academic staff to ensure timely submission and compliance with policies.
  • Collaborate with the Faculty’s Project Manager and Academic Lead to ensure consistency and alignment across schools and access key information for dissemination to school staff.
  • Design and implement digital course uplift and migration for online learning systems, ensuring compliance with UNSW requirements and maintaining accurate technical documentation.
  • Support the development of courses by liaising with convenors and course creators and contributing to the design of learning activities suitable for in-person and online delivery.
  • Support academic staff and industry convenors in the design, development and review of courses within related degree programs, applying sound pedagogical strategies to achieve effective learning outcomes.
  • Develop training materials and deliver professional development workshops to support the use of educational technologies, provide user-centred guidance and advice to staff, and identify local training and resource needs for escalation to faculty and central leadership.
  • Coordinate approval and governance processes, advise on timelines, support academic rule development and alignment with standards, liaise with SET for ECLIPS submissions, and provide governance and administration support for school education committees.
  • Support academic quality assurance activities, including program reviews, annual monitoring, and other faculty and university-level processes.
  • Compile, analyse, and report on student, program, and course data, while maintaining accurate and consistent academic records and systems to support decision-making and provide reliable information.
  • Build collaborative relationships with the Science Education Team (SET), Education Support Officers across the Faculty, and academics and professionals within the School to support communication, change management, and continuous improvement.
  • Interpret and advise on relevant policies, procedures and systems, manage school projects, resolve technical and procedural issues, and contribute to process improvements and new procedures, working independently and collaboratively.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant (Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and subsequent relevant experience, or an equivalent level of knowledge and competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience in the tertiary education sector, preferably with experience in academic quality, student services, student systems, or teaching support.
  • (Desirable) Experience with academic calendar transitions or curriculum transformation projects, knowledge of aviation education and training requirements, including short courses and lifelong learning programs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of teaching theory and practice as they apply in online and blended learning environments.
  • Experience using web-based learning management systems, media, and other technologies to design well-structured, engaging, and community-focused online learning experiences.
  • Ability to select, develop, analyse, and evaluate the performance of teaching technologies to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively with academics and support staff, adapt to changing priorities, and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage competing demands, and meet deadlines using sound judgement and initiative.
  • Proven problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify gaps, understand problems, develop solutions and suggest improvements.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
