Overview
As with other doctoral programmes, the main purpose of this Education (part time) degree at University of Cambridge is to prepare a substantial piece of original research, but in the EdD students will also use their professional expertise to consider how this research will influence systemic or institutional change.
Our doctoral students come from around the world and make important contributions to their fields. Graduates of the EdD have a track record of making significant changes to policy, practice and institutions. Typical applicants are practitioners in a variety of fields who recognise that education is key to innovation and change, and who have an idea of how they can influence and improve practice and/or policy. Research Environment
The EdD offers an innovative research environment, delivered through a series of weekend seminars hosted in one of the University’s Colleges. You will have the opportunity to be fully immersed in the College environment, and through participation in these events will become part of a vibrant EdD community. Expert sessions taught by Faculty academics cover methodological areas related to practice-based, systemic and institutional change. Guest sessions from researching professionals offer real-world examples of how to create, innovate and sustain change. With guidance from your dedicated Supervisor and Adviser, you will develop within a strong and supportive EdD research network.
The UK's Research Excellence Framework assesses the quality of research produced by UK Higher Education Institutions. Based on Power Ranking scores, the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge placed 4th overall in the UK in the most recent results. In the REF 2021 exercise, the Faculty's research environment score (UoA23) attained the maximum score of 100%, with a profile of 'world leading' outputs and impact case studies among the strongest in the UK.
Programme Structure
Curriculum includes:
- The EdD is delivered through a series of long-weekend seminars, at least 3 each academic year, scheduled throughout the year.
- Hosted in one of the Colleges, the seminars run from Thursday night through to Saturday night and will typically involve some time in social events (including a College Formal Hall), as well as sessions on research methodology and real-world examples of change-orientated research.
- Seminars will feature Faculty-based researchers as well as a range of EdD Alumni and partners who have successfully researched change.
- Researching change requires a range of skills: students will be introduced to ways of working with data, evaluating impact and change through careful analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, as well as skills associated with leadership and interpersonal communication required to make change and innovation happen.

- Applicants for this course should have achieved a Masters (Pass).
- If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country.
- The EdD offered by the Faculty of Education is a research degree. Applicants for this course are, therefore, expected to have already developed demonstrable research abilities and skills in their chosen area of inquiry. The applicant's Master's degree will normally be in Education or a discipline related to the proposed doctoral research topic.
- Applicants without a UK-equivalent Master's degree, or those not currently pursuing a Master's, may still be considered if the required standard for EdD study can be evidenced through alternate criteria.
