What the Educational Technology Designer Role at JCU Actually Involves

Top University Jobs at JCU

Most job ads for educational technology roles describe a title and a list of duties. They rarely tell you what the work actually looks like on a Tuesday. James Cook University's new educational technology designer role in Townsville is worth a close read because the posting is specific about location and employer. That specificity filters out the noise before you spend a day on an application.

If you've worked as a learning designer, instructional designer, or digital learning advisor, you already know the pattern. The title sits at JCU, a public university with a strong tropical research identity and a campus in North Queensland. The posting lists Townsville, not a generic remote anywhere. That is part of the job: you need to be present enough to work with academic teams face to face.

This isn't a role where you read a brief, disappear to build a course, and return weeks later. The designers who thrive in these jobs spend as much time listening to academics as they do configuring modules. If that mix appeals, keep reading.

What the Role Actually Does

An educational technology designer turns a unit outline into a learnable digital experience. You sit between the academic who owns the content and the platform where students encounter it. The work includes mapping learning outcomes, designing assessment tasks, building modules in the learning management system, recording or editing media, checking accessibility, and running workshops for teaching staff.

You will not be writing software all day, though you need enough technical fluency to configure tools, troubleshoot integration issues, and explain settings to someone who would rather not think about them. A typical week might involve moving a third-year law unit from face-to-face lectures to a blended format, rebuilding a pharmacy module so mobile students can use it, training a lecturer on discussion tools, and then reviewing a simulation for nursing students. A different week might see you working with an Indigenous education team on culturally appropriate resources.

The role sits inside the university's learning and teaching support function, but you should confirm the exact team in the position description. Some Australian universities split these roles between central learning design units and faculty-based teams. JCU's title suggests a design-first emphasis, less a pure systems administrator role. The position description will make that distinction clear.

The Skills That Move an Application to the Shortlist

Australian university job ads for this role family use different names: learning designer, educational designer, digital learning producer, educational technologist. The JCU title is educational technology designer, but the selection criteria will tell you where the weighting sits. Read them before you spend a weekend polishing your CV.

Selection panels at this level look for four things:

  • Evidence you can design a unit of study, not just build a page in an LMS. Show a course you redesigned and what changed for students.
  • Working knowledge of learning design models such as constructive alignment, backward design, or the ABC Learning Design method. Panels in Australian higher education use these terms casually, and you should too.
  • Experience with digital tools used in Australian universities: a learning management system, a video platform, an interactive content tool, and a quiz or assessment engine.
  • Proof you can coach academics who are time-poor and sceptical about new technology. That often comes from workshop facilitation, one-on-one support, writing plain-language guides, or a short screencast demo.

You do not need to be a programmer, but if you can read basic HTML and understand how an API feeds data from one tool into another, that will help you stand out. More valuable is the ability to say no kindly when a request would create an unusable course.

Portfolio thinking matters. Bring a storyboard, a facilitator guide, a short video walkthrough, or a course module you are allowed to share. Interview panels rarely ask to see one, but when you offer to show it, the conversation shifts from generic questions to the work itself.

The Townsville Factor: Cost, Lifestyle, and the Commute

James Cook University is based in Townsville, Queensland, a regional city with a lower cost of living than Sydney or Melbourne. The campus is one of Australia's northern research universities, known for marine science, tropical health, environmental work, and education in remote communities. If you are moving from interstate, factor in the practical difference between a city of roughly 180,000 people and a capital city.

Townsville has a dry tropical climate, a long wet season, and a commute that is usually measured in minutes rather than hours. The Great Barrier Reef and Magnetic Island are close, which matters to some candidates and not to others. The role is listed on JCU's careers portal with Townsville as the work location, so think through whether you can work there before you apply. Remote candidates should not assume a fully online arrangement; most of these roles involve some campus presence because design meetings work better in person.

If you already live in North Queensland, you have an advantage. If you do not, look at rental costs around Douglas, Annandale, Kirwan, and the inner city before you decide the move is impossible. A regional salary can stretch further in Townsville than the same classification in Brisbane or Melbourne.

Before You Spend a Saturday on the Application

Go to the actual advertisement on James Cook University's careers portal and open the position description in a separate tab. It will list the classification level, salary band, closing date, and any selection criteria that must be addressed. Do not skip the position description; committees read your responses against it.

You can also see the full listing on AcademicJobs for quick reference, but the official JCU portal is where you submit. If the ad does not show a salary band, ask the contact officer named in the description before you invest a day in the application. That one question can save you from applying for a role at the wrong level.

Check the closing date on the official portal, not the aggregator. Some ads are pulled early when a strong field forms. If you decide to apply, give yourself at least three hours to tailor a cover letter and selection criteria, plus time for someone else to proofread.

The Bigger Australian EdTech Job Picture

Educational technology and learning design roles across Australian universities have grown steadily since the pandemic forced rapid shifts online. The work has moved from building basic LMS pages to designing hybrid courses, planning for generative AI in assessment, improving learner analytics, and advising academics on accessible design.

Professionals in this field exchange practice through ASCILITE, the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education. James Cook University also publishes its learning and teaching priorities on its learning and teaching page, which will give you a sense of the institutional context before an interview.

In North Queensland, employers outside universities also hire learning technologists in mining, health, government training, and agricultural extension programs. That wider market means you can move between industry and higher education if you keep a portfolio of work samples rather than only a CV. Panels want evidence of what you have built, not a list of tools you have heard of.

This Week, Do One Thing

Open the JCU educational technology designer ad and copy the selection criteria into a document. For each criterion, write one sentence that shows what you did, the scale, and the result. That skeleton will tell you quickly whether this role is worth the full application.

If the answer is yes, check the AcademicJobs listing for any additional context and then submit through the official JCU portal before the closing date.

Frequently Asked Questions

💻What does an educational technology designer do at a university?

An educational technology designer takes a unit outline and turns it into a learnable digital experience. You work with academics to map learning outcomes, redesign assessments, build modules in the learning management system, check accessibility, and run training sessions for teaching staff. It's a design role with a strong technical comfort level rather than a pure IT support job.

📍Where is the James Cook University educational technology designer role located?

The position is listed on JCU's careers portal with Townsville, Queensland as the work location. Townsville is a regional city in North Queensland with a dry tropical climate and a lower cost of living than Sydney or Melbourne. Most of these roles include some on-campus work because design meetings with academics work better face to face.

🎓What qualifications do I need to apply?

Australian universities usually ask for a relevant degree or equivalent experience. More weight falls on evidence of learning design work, familiarity with digital tools, and ability to coach academics. Check the position description on the official JCU portal for any formal qualification requirement.

🧭Do I need to know how to code?

No. You do not need to be a programmer. Basic HTML, an understanding of how APIs connect tools, and the confidence to configure an LMS will help. The more important skill is being able to say no kindly when a request would produce an unusable course.

📝What skills should I highlight in my application?

Show a redesigned unit, not just a page you built in the LMS. Include learning design models you use, experience with common Australian university tools, and examples of coaching academics. Bring a storyboard, facilitator guide, video walkthrough, or course module if you can share it.

📌How do I apply for the JCU educational technology designer job?

Go to the official advertisement on James Cook University's careers portal, open the position description, and address the selection criteria. Submit through the JCU portal before the closing date. You can check the AcademicJobs listing for quick context, but the official portal is where submission happens.

💬What salary can I expect for an educational technology designer in Australia?

Pay varies by classification, university, and location. JCU will list the classification level and salary band in the position description. If the ad does not show a band, contact the officer named in the ad before you invest a day in the application.

🏝️Is the role remote or on campus?

The listing shows Townsville as the work location. Remote candidates should not assume a fully online arrangement; most of these roles involve some campus presence for design meetings and workshops. That said, arrangements can vary, so ask the contact officer if flexibility is a deciding factor.

🌏What is it like living in Townsville?

Townsville is a regional city of roughly 180,000 people. It offers a lower cost of living than Australia's capital cities, a dry tropical climate, and access to the Great Barrier Reef and Magnetic Island. Look at rental costs around Douglas, Annandale, Kirwan, and the inner city before making a move.

🚀What career paths follow a university educational technology designer role?

People move into senior learning design roles, academic development, educational innovation leadership, or specialist roles in learning analytics and generative AI planning. Outside universities, learning technologists work in mining, health, government training, and agricultural extension programs in North Queensland.

🤝How can I stand out in an interview?

Offer to show a work sample early. Talk about what changed for students because of your design, not just the tools you used. Use the language of constructive alignment, backward design, or ABC Learning Design comfortably, and show you can coach time-poor academics.

🔎Where can I see JCU's learning and teaching priorities before the interview?

James Cook University publishes its learning and teaching priorities on its learning and teaching page. That page will give you a sense of institutional language and current directions before you meet the panel.
