Job Summary

LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Electrical Engineering Intern to join its team.

This position is located in Livingston, LA and is an in-person, year-round opportunity.

LIGO Laboratory is a National Science Foundation major facility dedicated to observing the newly discovered gravitational-wave universe. Jointly operated by the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the LIGO Laboratory operates world-leading observatories near Richland, WA and Baton Rouge, LA as well as R&D centers on the Caltech and MIT campuses. The LIGO Laboratory’s mission spans a broad and vibrant array of activities related to gravitational-wave physics and astronomy, including detector operations, R&D toward detector improvements, gravitational-wave astrophysics, observatory operations, and education and public outreach.

Essential Job Duties

The Electrical Engineering Intern job duties include:

  • Assembly of electronics hardware.
  • Fabrication of wiring harnesses and cabling.
  • Testing to existing requirements, test plans and protocols using common laboratory testing equipment, such as voltmeters, oscilloscopes and dynamic signal analyzers.
  • Documentation of test results and error/bug reporting.
  • Use of, and some editing of, computer scripts for electronics testing.
  • Inventory of electronics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled as student pursuing an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related major.
  • Ability to work at least 10-15 hours/week during the semester, additional hours/week during summer break.
  • Ability to commute to job in Livingston, LA.
  • Flexible work hours, during the daytime Monday-Friday.
  • Ability to lift items that weigh up to 20 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electronics experience.
  • Programming experience.

Hiring Range

$19.00 - $22.00 Per Hour
