Job Description
- Act as liaison to the cities of Cambridge, Boston and Somerville to oversee, manage, and coordinate the attaining of permits, scheduling of city inspections, and the compliance of projects/facilities throughout the campus so as to minimize disruption to Harvard classes, research, projects, and operations. Ensure compliance and oversee and manage any conflicts/issues/problems through resolution.
- As University designee, obtains annual electrical maintenance permits and individual construction permits for electrical work performed by Engineering & Utilities (E&U) and Facility Maintenance Operations (FMO). Acts as a resource for University electricians on interpretation of codes and regulations; coordinates permit applications for Campus Services; ensures code compliance. Issues periodic reports of maintenance work conducted.
- Work in coordination with Engineering & Utilities (E&U) and Facility Maintenance Operations (FMO) service units to help assure that they are meeting their compliance responsibilities. Service units include: Electrical Distribution, Elevator Services, Fire Safety Services, Maintenance Services and Plant Operations.
- Must keep current on all state and national, codes & regulations and be aware of local interpretation of same. These codes include the International Building Code (IBC), the MA State Building Code (780 CMR), the MA Electrical Code (527 CMR), the MA Comprehensive Fire Safety Code (527 CMR) and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes. Maintain library of code references.
- Act as the primary administrator of electrical, building and life safety system inspections for the University. The areas of inspectional responsibility include compliance related to electrical code, building code and life safety code.
- Schedule and coordinate with the Inspectional Services Departments (ISD) of Cambridge and Boston and University facilities owners for the annual inspections of University facilities. Conducts independent inspections and/or accompanies outside inspectors. Distributes reports and issues timely responses to inspector’s findings to all affected parties.
- Responsible for maintaining all inspectional records and processing all fees and costs associated with inspections and permits.
- Acts as permit coordinator for all temporary or special permits related to University events. May act as a liaison with various City Offices.
- Utilizes Engineering & Utilities’ maintenance tracking/work management system to identify compliance needs, to track compliance related work and to generate reports.
- Interact with the State Board of Examiners on issues related to local wiring inspector decisions involving Harvard University projects and other Board matters that may affect the University. Interact with the Office of the State Fire Marshal on matters related to the Massachusetts electrical and building codes.
- Performs design reviews for any new installations or renovations proposed, may be regularly involved in field inspections of University projects.
- Act as a support resource for the University’s efforts in execution and performance requirements of NFPA 4: Standard for Integrated Fire Protection and Life Safety System Testing.
- Performs special projects as directed.
Working Conditions
This is an on-campus position based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Must be physically fit and mentally alert at all times. Must be able to enter various types of buildings, industrial plants, and/or construction sites and access non-handicap accessible work spaces/areas. Must be able to utilize ladders, scaffolds, high-lifts, and enter/work in confined spaces. Must be able to frequently walk up and down stairs, ladders, etc., ascending and descending up to 200 feet in total vertical elevation changes at one time.
Qualifications
Must have at least five years’ experience in a utility or facilities service unit environment. Must hold a Master Electrician license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and possess experience in code interpretation; demonstrated ability to successfully develop favorable interpersonal relationships; demonstrated excellence in coordination of multi-party situations, responsiveness, written and oral communications; and strong documentation and organizational skills. The position requires experience working in a customer-oriented, internal service business structure, and the ability to work well as a team member. Valid State driver’s license required.
