Located in Greater Boston, MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college, offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will join a vibrant educational community, and have a desire and ability to serve a population of students with various needs and backgrounds.

The basic purpose of this work is to install and/or maintain various types of electrical systems and mechanical equipment located on the Framingham, Ashland, and Wellesley campuses of MassBay Community College.

This person is designated as a member of the essential personnel team that responds to weather-related and other emergencies. The incumbent receives supervision from the Building Maintenance Supervisor and/or Assistant Director of Facilities.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Test, repair, operate, install and/or maintain various types of electrical systems and mechanical equipment by operating the appropriate equipment and tools to ensure proper maintenance and functioning of necessary equipment;
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and related equipment by using necessary equipment and reading schematics, diagrams and outlines to identify and correct operational problems;
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of equipment and materials by contacting vendors for equipment prices and ordering equipment and materials;
  • Inspect the work of outside contractors to ensure compliance with agency safety codes and regulations;
  • Monitor building automation system and make necessary adjustments;
  • Knowledge of building power supply and distribution systems;
  • Knowledge of state and local electrical codes;
  • Determine on-the-job procedure changes by consulting with trades people, private utilities, outside contractors and engineers to obtain technical advice and coordinate and expedite work projects;
  • Determine acceptable quality of materials and/or equipment necessary for a job to ensure that completed work projects comply with specifications;
  • Use computerized work order maintenance management system (FMX) to input, track, schedule, and respond to college-wide work requests, preventative maintenance, and emergency needs;
  • Attend meetings, seminars, workshops, etc. to exchange information;
  • Work with BAS contractor during monthly preventive maintenance visits;
  • Perform standard preventive maintenance procedures for electrical and mechanical systems;
  • Perform related duties such as reviewing technical literature to keep abreast of developments in the field; resetting fire alarm systems; deciding when to shut down main electrical power supply in an emergency;
  • Make recommendations for long- and short-term upgrades to electrical systems;
  • Responsible for setting up, breaking down, and/or moving staging;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a licensed journeyman or master electrician;
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates' training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action;
  • Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity;
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools used in electrical practice such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc.;
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment including testing equipment used in electrical work;
  • Knowledge of safety practices and precautions observed in electrical trade;
  • Knowledge of life and fire safety systems;
  • Knowledge of inspection techniques used in electrical trade;
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of handheld power tools such as drills, etc.;
  • Skill in using small hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc.;
  • Skill in the use of precision measuring equipment, gauges and instrumentation used in electrical work;
  • Skill in using handheld power tools such as drills;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, rules and regulations concerning electrical practice;
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely;
  • Ability to maintain accurate records;
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as electrical plans, schematics, drawings, etc.;
  • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations;
  • Ability to install, maintain and repair electrical wiring systems and mechanical equipment;
  • Ability to detect and locate causes of electrical failure or breakdown of equipment;
  • Ability to work with the tools, materials and equipment of the electrical trade;
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, blueprints, drawings, etc.;
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds;
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others;
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time;
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy object;
  • Ability to give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner;
  • Physical stamina and endurance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sensitivity and commitment to the goals of Affirmative Action;
  • Experience working in a community college or similar environment;
  • Demonstrates commitment to working with students in need;
  • Minimum of three years related experience working in higher education;
  • Experience working with building automation systems;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Proven ability to work independently;
  • Experience using a computerized work order system;
  • OSHA 10 Certified, or willing to attain certification within one year of employment.

Special Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator’s license;
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician's License issued by the State Examiners of Electricians.

Additional Information:

Salary Range: AFSCME Unit II, Grade 17 Step 1 $60,119.28 annually. Appointments from outside the bargaining unit begin at Step 1 of the range.
