Electrician & Plumber
New River Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under a state-wide system of 23 community colleges. The college is located on a one hundred plus acre site at the intersection of U.S. Routes 11 and 100 in Dublin, Virginia with an instructional site in Christiansburg.
Duties:
- Service, inspect, repair and replace light fixtures, motors, motor starters/controllers, heaters, relays, breakers, fuses and wiring.
- Install conduit, new service, electrical outlets and circuits of various voltages.
- Run data and communication lines.
- Maintain fire alarm and master clock systems.
- Insure proper operation of parking lot lighting.
- Perform troubleshooting techniques on various specialized equipment.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on assigned electrical and mechanical equipment and systems, such as emergency generators, automatic doors, electrical switchgear and panels, and fire alarm systems.
- Assist the HVAC technician with scheduled maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment.
- Assist other facilities workers in performing scheduled maintenance and repair on mechanical and electrical equipment of the buildings and grounds.
- Work independently on performing routine electrical tasks, such as monthly monitoring of emergency generators, emergency lighting, electrical meter readings, exterior and interior lighting schedules, etc.
- Assist maintenance crew as needed on various tasks, such as service of pool cars, painting of light poles, moving furniture, construction/renovation projects and campus beautification projects.
- Supervise outside contractors with electrical projects to ensure appropriate work standards and safety practices are in place.
- Create and maintain inventory of electrical materials and supplies.
- Serve as “essential personnel” in removing snow, ice and/or debris from parking lots, roads, drives and sidewalks, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
High school graduate. Valid Virginia driver’s license. Demonstrated experience with high voltages, such as 480 volts, three phase; servicing fire alarm systems, data signaling, communication systems, emergency generators and circuitry; installing and repairing various equipment used in the electrical, mechanical, plumbing and HVAC trades; building construction, renovation methods and techniques used in institutional settings; scheduled preventive maintenance programs; working with contractors on complex projects; utilizing plumbing tools and equipment such as pipe cutters, wrenches, augers and diagnostic devices; working with various plumbing materials such as PVC, PEX, copper & cast iron; soldering, brazing and solvent welding techniques; installing and maintaining commercial plumbing systems including sinks, toilets, showers, faucets and water heaters. Demonstrated ability to perform intermediate mathematical calculations with the ability to understand, interpret and design electrical and plumbing schematics. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to lift more than fifty pounds and work from heights above twenty feet. Willingness to work outside in extreme and inclement weather conditions.
Additional Considerations:
College, trade school training or equivalent experience in the electrical and plumbing fields. A minimum of five years’ experience as a lead electrician and journeyman plumber. Virginia tradesman/journeyman electrician’s/plumber’s license. Knowledge of the National Electric Code, the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and basic principles of electricity as well as water supply and drainage systems, venting, pipe materials and installation methods and basic fluid principles. Demonstrated ability to design, troubleshoot, diagnose, test and repair a wide variety of electrical and plumbing systems such as elevators, chillers, pumps, automatic doors, various lighting circuitry, leak detection and repair, drain cleaning, fixture replacement, water heater maintenance and pipe system troubleshooting. Industrial experience in electrical and plumbing repairs and maintenance, including scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance. Knowledge of and experience with architectural and electrical and plumbing drawings/schematics. Demonstrated effective leadership skills.
