The Electronics Lab Manager manages an electronics shop and provides technical, maintenance, and repair support for laboratory instruments in the three departments housed in TU’s Science Complex (Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences). The Electronics Lab Manager is also responsible for equipment inventory and instructional laboratory support within the Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences (PAGS). The Electronics Lab Manager is a team player in regular department and college operations by maintaining positive interactions and effective communications with faculty, staff and students, managing multiple priorities, and adapting to evolving needs of the department and college.
Responsibilities and Duties
Science Complex Instrument Support
- Provide general electronics and technical instrument support for classrooms and research labs in the Science Complex.
- Use electronics expertise to troubleshoot and repair research and instructional lab instrumentation. Consult with vendors on lab equipment maintenance and repair as necessary.
- Improve lab efficiency through applied programming, technologies, and design.
- Assist department and college faculty and staff with capital equipment purchase and installation.
- Keep orderly electronics shop. Maintain supply of electronics components and replacement parts.
- Manage Electronics Shop budget.
- Consult with faculty and students on design of new equipment and instruments.
Department Instructional Laboratory Support
- Assist faculty in development of laboratory exercises and demonstrations.
- Assist faculty who are new to the teaching labs.
Department Laboratory Property Management
- Serve as inventory coordinator for department laboratory equipment with TU Property Control.
- Maintain an inventory of instructional laboratory equipment and plan for repair or replacement as necessary.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics or a related field.
- Three years of work experience in an electronics lab environment.
- Strong hands-on skills in analog and digital electronics and ability to diagnose problems specialized lab equipment and perform some repairs
- Proficiency with tools such as oscilloscopes, signal generators (including microwave), spectrum analyzers, soldering stations, and CAD software
- Experience with microcontrollers, FPGA programming, and LabVIEW
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple pressing priorities and tasks and follow up with internal and external stakeholders through closure.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, and knowledge to project a professional and positive image of the institution.
- Ability to interact with a diverse team and in a diverse environment.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in electrical engineering, physics or a related field.
- Experience working in academic laboratory settings.
- Familiarity with cryogenic and vacuum systems.
- Teaching/mentoring experience.
Salary and Benefits
Targeted salary range of $64,000-$67,000 annually and full University benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 15 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
