Job Summary

The UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine Department of Medical Sciences invites applications for a Clinical Instructor position in Emergency Medicine within UW Veterinary Care. This renewable, full-time (100% FTE) academic veterinary practice appointment is designed for veterinarians with a strong interest in emergency medicine and clinical teaching in a tertiary-care academic environment.

The successful candidate will provide emergency patient care through direct case receiving and management while providing oversight and clinical instruction for veterinary students and rotating interns. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking an academic clinical career focused on patient care and teaching, without formal research requirements.

UW Veterinary Care evaluates approximately 30,000 small animal patients annually. The Emergency Medicine service supports a high caseload and provides around-the-clock care in a collaborative environment alongside specialty services including anesthesia and pain management, cardiology, dentistry and oral surgery, diagnostic imaging, dermatology, extracorporeal therapy, internal medicine, neurology, medical, surgical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, and primary care.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Providing direct emergency case receiving, patient care, medical decision-making, and client communication for small animal emergency patients.
  • Delivering clinical instruction, supervision, and mentorship to veterinary students and rotating interns during emergency medicine patient care activities.
  • Participating in an average of approximately 40 hours per week of emergency case receiving and/or teaching activities.
  • Supporting a collaborative learning environment through bedside teaching, case discussions, and clinical oversight of learners.
  • Participating in additional educational activities, as appropriate, including emergency medicine procedures laboratories, topic rounds, and other student-centered teaching opportunities.
  • Working collaboratively with faculty, house officers, veterinary technicians, and staff to support excellence in patient care and education.

This position does not include formal research requirements, though participation in scholarly or educational activities is welcomed based on individual interests.
