Job Description:

Salary: $68,000-$72,000, commensurate with experience.

Collective Bargaining Agreement: This position is governed by the MSCA bargaining agreement.

The Studio For Interrelated Media (SIM) Department at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) in Boston, MA, is seeking a highly motivated Interdisciplinary Artist Teacher, who is engaged in contemporary practice, performative and/or speculative art, and/or emerging technologies, for a one year temporary full-time benefited position, beginning Fall 2026. SIM is a multi-disciplinary program with a strong emphasis on critique, conceptual foundations, student agency, and individualized advising. Students work in all media, with a concentration on interdisciplinary practice and innovative technologies.

This position is part of a highly collaborative, innovative and flexible team of faculty that shares departmental planning, student advising, and curricular design. This position includes teaching responsibilities in a team-taught Major Studio class consisting of weekly student-run presentations and productions in which students select, schedule and technically support their colleagues' presentations in all media.

This position also includes teaching elective courses already in circulation as well as other courses to be proposed based on the candidate's expertise. Additional duties include individualized advising, mentoring and office hours; departmental meetings; participating in review boards; and committee work. This position is based on a 3/3 course load.

Job Duties

  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring students.
  • Teach three studio courses per semester.
  • Participate in student Review Boards.
  • Meet weekly with SIM Department faculty to discuss curriculum, semester planning and student progress.
  • Maintain open office hours for student consultation at least 3 hours per week on two different days.
  • Advise individual students regarding registration and artistic practice.
  • Committee work.
  • Provide feedback on students' progress, including evaluation of student mastery of course and program learning outcomes using the tools provided by the college. (All official email communications between the faculty and students and/or the College must be conducted through MassArt's email server.)
  • Prepare and submit required documentation (to College and to students) complying with policies and procedures including but not limited to: disability accommodations, syllabus and textbook submissions, attendance, grades, training, course evaluations, learning outcomes assessments, learning management system, email and technology, faculty evaluation, etc.
  • Evaluate and select text and instructional materials and prepare course materials and lesson plans.
  • Notify the Department Chair of student situations/issues (i.e. academic integrity).
  • Develop and implement diverse teaching and learning for different learning styles and to respond to the needs of learners from a variety of educational backgrounds in a multicultural environment.
  • Effectively use a variety of digital authoring programs and general office software.
  • Effectively communicate interpersonally both orally and in writing and demonstrate productive organizational and interpersonal relationship skills with students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications

  • An MFA or equivalent terminal degree in their relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrate a passionate interest in evolving a contemporary experimental/interdisciplinary arts program in a team-taught collaborative environment.
  • Terminal degree in their relevant discipline.
  • Have at least one year of teaching experience in interdisciplinary artistic practice, not including teaching assistant positions.
  • Maintain an active professional practice and strong portfolio in interdisciplinary artistic forms and approaches.
  • Experience teaching and advising a diverse student body.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of teaching experience in interdisciplinary artistic practice, not including teaching assistant positions.
  • Multi-disciplinary knowledge and particular expertise in a combination of the following:
  • Proposal, grant and research writing skills;
  • Movement practice and Body based forms;
  • Game design;
  • Electronic Arts including Computational interaction design and programming;
  • Demonstrated commitment towards team teaching (public school or interdisciplinary curriculum), shared leadership, and collegiality.
  • Media and Social Theory;
  • Events and exhibition planning and production;
  • Improvisation;
  • Sound art;
  • Experience design and immersive media;
  • Social intervention;
  • Conceptually based art;
  • Video installation and projection mapping;
  • Artistic direction;
  • Professional practices (public speaking, prototyping, concept rendering).
