About the Project
Combine advanced finite element and analytical modelling, experimental machining, and artificial intelligence to develop the next generation of intelligent tool-wear monitoring and prediction, working directly with global cutting-tool leader Sandvik Coromant.
Tool wear is a major source of variation in machining forces, dimensional accuracy and process stability, often leading to premature tool replacement, component scrap and reduced productivity. This industry-sponsored EngD project, in collaboration with Sandvik Coromant, will combine physics-based finite element and analytical modelling, experimental machining, and artificial intelligence to understand how tool wear influences cutting forces and develop new methods for monitoring and predicting tool condition during turning. You will conduct research using state-of-the-art facilities at both Sandvik Coromant and the University of Sheffield.
You will develop a broad range of highly sought-after technical skills, spanning physics-based modelling and simulation, mathematical modelling, and scientific programming to develop and implement predictive models for industrial exploitation. You will gain hands-on experience in experimental design, machining trials, lab-based characterisation (SEM, EDX etc..), and sensor-based data acquisition, alongside the ability to process, analyse and interpret large, complex datasets. You will also develop expertise in machine learning, data science, statistical analysis, and model validation, learning how to combine experimental measurements, numerical simulations and data-driven techniques to solve real-world manufacturing challenges.
As an industry-sponsored project, you will work directly with Sandvik Coromant's technical specialists, contributing to research with tangible applications in cutting-tool development, intelligent process monitoring and machining simulation. An international supervisory and technical team spanning the UK and Sandvik Coromant's sites in Sweden, will provide opportunities for industrial collaboration and potentially international travel.
