NC State University is seeking a proactive and skilled Engineering / Architectural Technician III to join our Building Maintenance and Operations department. In this role, you’ll play a vital part in supporting the university’s infrastructure by managing capital improvement projects, leading preventive maintenance efforts, and resolving complex building system issues. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee select projects from planning through completion, including documentation, inspections, and integration with maintenance operations
- Serve as the lead technician supporting journey- and contributing-level planners, ensuring proper execution, coordination, and quality assurance across campus systems
- Analyze and resolve complex building system issues efficiently using industry tools and best practices
- Update annual preventive maintenance schedules, approve PM templates, and collaborate with engineering staff to establish and implement new standards
- Manage assigned projects involving asbestos removal by working with certified specialists and ensuring all safety regulations are followed
- Assist in rolling out new technologies and providing guidance to team members for continuous improvement
- Conduct field reviews to ensure all systems meet regulatory requirements and university standards
- Organize planned work and collaborate with supervisors to schedule and delegate tasks to shop staff or contractors in their designated area
- Teach classes in the entry-level assistant mechanic training program and assist in implementing newer technologies for the PM program
Other Responsibilities: Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Minimum Education and Experience: Associate’s Degree in the assigned discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require certification. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications: Background in construction, renovation, or maintenance of buildings and systems, including project planning; Experience in managing projects, shops, and contractors across multiple trades; Strong technical knowledge of equipment maintenance; Strong written and oral communication skills and solid compliance skills; Experience creating project scopes and overseeing multi-trade mechanical, electrical, controls, and plumbing projects; Able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, with or without accommodations; Familiarity with National Electric Code, National Building Code, and NFPA standards; Knowledge of NICET, NATE, and other relevant training programs.
Preferred Qualifications: Considerable knowledge of work methods, process techniques, resource requirements, and safety protocols necessary for completing work or services; Direct knowledge and hands-on experience in one or more building mechanical trades; Solid compliance skills, with journey-level experience in building trades working in facilities maintenance and operations, or equivalent engineering education and experience.
Required License(s) or Certification(s): Valid driver’s license required; NC driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
