As a DMEM Engineering Technician, you will provide practical technical support and advice to a wide range of student, staff, and company project activities. Supporting structured workshop activities, you will formally demonstrate a range of workshop skills and machining operations to the undergraduate students in the Engineering Faculty.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) provides a unique offering of combining end-to-end multidisciplinary expertise from creative design, through engineering design, manufacturing and management of the entire system. We are part of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, one of the largest and most successful engineering faculties in the UK, and the largest in Scotland. Providing an excellent student experience is core to DMEM’s vision and this role will make a crucial contribution to the success of our teaching and to the overall experience across our undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students.

As an Engineering Technician, you will provide practical technical support and advice to a wide range of student, staff, and company project activities. Supporting structured laboratory activities, you will formally demonstrate a range of workshop skills and machining operations to the undergraduate students in the Engineering Faculty. The Engineering Technician will also be responsible for planning and supervision of these structured activities, including risk assessment, developing safe systems of work, ordering materials, preparation of registers, equipment planning and tool/equipment maintenance. You will produce machined parts from engineering drawings to a high level of accuracy, using all standard engineering workshop machinery (Manual and CNC lathes, milling machines etc.). For more complex research projects you use your broad and deep understanding of a range of methods and procedures of engineering applications to provide technical support and guidance for the manufacture of custom components and experimental rigs. You will have good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to inform and explain technical elements to stakeholders with a varying degree of technical knowledge.

To be considered for this role you will be educated to HNC level, or with the relevant industrial work experience. You will have significant knowledge and expertise in an engineering workshop environment as well as experience and demonstrable working knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures. You will have experience of providing a high level of personal responsibility and initiative to respond directly to queries and you will have experience of applying judgement to deal with daily challenges and circumstances, with limited guidance from senior colleagues. You will have significant knowledge within the field of mechanical and production engineering. You will have good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to inform and explain technical elements to stakeholders with a varying degree of technical knowledge. You will have excellent troubleshooting skills, including a methodical approach to solving complex problems, with limited guidance. You will have an ability to work autonomously, prioritising and coordinating your own workload and making decisions with minimum supervision to meet project deadlines and you will have the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Strong customer focus is essential.
