English as a Second Language (Non-Credit)- Adjunct Professor

Overview

THIS IS A TEMPORARY, HOURLY AS NEEDED POSITION WITHOUT PERMANENT STATUS.

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department/division be interested in scheduling an interview.

Minimum Qualifications

A. The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages; OR
  2. A bachelor’s degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor; OR
  3. A bachelor’s degree with any of the majors specified in subparagraph (2) above; and one year of experience teaching ESL in an accredited institution; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor; OR
  4. Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in ESL; OR
  5. The equivalent (must request an equivalency review in the application), OR
  6. California Community College credential, “Valid for Life” (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed Code § 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential must be submitted with the application.);

AND

B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. MATESOL or related degree.
  2. Evening availability Monday – Thursday.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Teach noncredit ESL course that prepare students for college and career pathways, ranging from literacy to high intermediate levels. Course may include integrated skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and pronunciation.
  2. Maintain pedagogical currency in the field of second language acquisition in order to meet the needs and support the learning goals of noncredit ESL learners.
  3. Instruct and assist in the growth and success of noncredit ESL students through careful preparation of course materials following establish course outlines, effective teaching methods, and informed critical feedback on assignments.
  4. Perform related duties as assigned including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities and college, division, and department policies.
