English Instructor
Job Description
Great Basin College is seeking highly qualified individuals for a full-time, tenure-track English instructor position at either its main campus in Elko, Nevada, or its Pahrump Valley Center in Pahrump, Nevada. Teaching excellence is the primary requirement, and instructional responsibilities are to teach a variety of in-person and distance education English courses with an emphasis on professional writing and technical communication. Instructing first-year college composition English courses will also be a requirement. A teaching background in professional writing and technical communication is required. This position includes the design and delivery of courses that emphasize professional writing genres, digital literacy, AI-assisted writing practices, composition, and rhetorical analysis.
Great Basin College has a mission to serve the higher education needs of rural Nevada, and as such, teaching requires extensive use of distance education technology. Experience with Canvas LMS platform and synchronous video delivery is preferred. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position at one of Great Basin College's campuses: Elko, Pahrump, Winnemucca, or Ely, all of which are in rural Nevada. The start date will be August 1, 2026.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A master's degree in English or a closely related field is required; a Ph.D. in English is strongly preferred.
- Willingness to teach and develop college-level courses on generative AI technologies and their uses in writing and communication.
- Demonstrated experience teaching college-level professional writing and composition courses or equivalent.
- Familiarity with generative AI technologies and their applications in workplace communication practices.
- Familiarity with distance-delivery technologies and willingness to teach in multiple modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, online).
- A demonstrated student-centered teaching philosophy, emphasizing inclusive pedagogical practices and adaptable course design for learners with varying preparation and learning styles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Industry or academic experience in professional communication and technical writing.
- Experience using AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot or other generative AI systems.
- Evidence of scholarly or professional engagement with AI communication studies.
- Evidence of innovative approaches to teaching professional writing and composition, particularly in contexts emphasizing equity, access, and representation.
- Experience contributing to departmental or campus initiatives supporting students' ethical and responsible use of emerging AI technologies.
Responsibilities:
- Perform all duties as required of all full-time tenured track GBC faculty, such as, non-instructional duties: advising students, committee work, and department duties as assigned.
- Work collaboratively with other team members of the department and college in pursuing departmental and institutional goals with a genuine spirit of cooperation, and flexibility in a diverse college setting.
- Instructional development, delivery and assessment of assigned courses.
- Teach a combination of in-person, Zoom, and asynchronous online classes as needed to serve the GBC service area.
- Handle administrative duties related to teaching and program development including strategic planning and assessment.
- Occasional travel by car throughout the GBC service area as needed, with or without reasonable accommodation (as per the Americans with Disabilities Act).
- Accept responsibility for professional and personal growth.
- Participate in college wide and other committees as appropriate.
