Overview
Within this English PhD from University of York we also have distinctive expertise in practice-led teaching and research, including archival and historical work, and printing.
As you can see from our list of current students and recent graduates, we supervise thesis projects across all literary periods and genres. Our postgraduate students work in an intellectually invigorating environment, are supported by supervisors who are leaders in their field, and with structured meetings and feedback that allow them to fulfill their research ambitions.
We also offer the PhD in English as a Distance Learning option for students unable to reside full-time in York.
Research Student Training:
- Research students of the English programme from University of York receive training in research methods and skills appropriate to the stage they have reached and the nature of their work. In addition to regular supervisory meetings to discuss planning, researching and writing the thesis, we offer sessions on bibliographic and archival resources (digital, print and manuscript).
- Our students receive guidance in applying to and presenting at professional conferences, preparing and submitting material for publication and applying for jobs. We meet other training needs in handling research data, various modern languages, palaeography, bibliography. Classical and medieval Latin are also available.
- We also offer training in teaching skills for students who wish to pursue teaching posts following their degree. This includes sessions on the delivery and content of seminars and workshops to undergraduates, a structured shadowing programme, teaching inductions and comprehensive guidance and resources for our graduate teaching assistants.
- Our teacher training is directed by our dedicated Graduate Teaching Assistant Coordinator. Students also have the opportunity to further their training by taking courses accredited by Advance HE: York Learning and Teaching Award (YLTA) and the York Professional and Academic Development scheme (YPAD).

We are not aware of any specific GRE, GMAT or GPA grading score requirements for this programme.
English Requirements
TOEFL iBT: 96. The TOEFL iBT® is accepted by more than 13,000 universities and other institutions in over 160 countries. The test can be taken at a test center or at home. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS: 7. The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).
Other Requirements
- For doctoral research, we would generally expect you to have completed an MA in a relevant subject.
- Preliminary enquiries are welcomed and should be made as early as possible. However, a scattershot approach - emailing all staff members regardless of the relationship between their research interests and yours - is unlikely to produce positive results. Before writing your research proposal, we advise you to consult the list of staff research interests and identify potential supervisors in the department. When making their application, candidates are advised to make their research proposals as specific and clear as possible. Candidates should indicate the member(s) of staff that they would wish to work with.
