Description

About Dell Medical School

As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation's leading research universities, the Dell Medical School pursues innovation in the redesign of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education. It is the fifth medical school in the UT System and the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities.

The University of Texas Medical Center, anchored by Dell Medical School, is defining the future of health. Announced in August 2023 with planning and implementation underway, The University of Texas Medical Center will cement Austin as a premier destination for health care alongside other major Texas cities. With two new, state-of-the-art hospitals - A UT specialty hospital and a cancer center being built by MD Anderson - plus the academic and research expertise of UT, The University of Texas Medical Center will provide the integrated, world-class care that is a hallmark of academic medicine.

The Dell Medical School is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to excellence within the health learning system.

About CHEER:

With a bold mission of building a healthier environment, the center works to improve the health of people locally and globally by bringing together experts from across campus to better understand how our environments affect individual and community health. Led by a Steering Committee with faculty from Dell Medical School, Cockrell School of Engineering, the College of Natural Sciences, the College of Pharmacy, the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, and the Jackson School of Geosciences, the center focuses on accelerating critical discoveries to improve public health, facilitating research collaborations, and training future environmental health scientists.

About the Environmental Health and AI Position:

The Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin seeks a faculty candidate at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor to lead academic growth at the intersection of artificial intelligence and environmental health. The position lies within the Applied AI and Data Sciences For Life Sciences cluster hiring initiative as part of the University of Texas at Austin's declaration of 2024 as the Year of AI and commitment to leadership in AI across all fields. Whereas the appointments will be primarily based at the Dell Medical School, we expect the position will leverage collaborative opportunities across the entire UT community with both existing faculty and others who will arrive as part of the University's major investment in AI and health.

We are committed to strengthening our leadership in research, development, and implementation of environmental health-oriented artificial intelligence (AI) and data science capabilities. Candidates with a track record of leading an independent research program and doctoral training in one or more of the following areas will be preferred: environmental health sciences, statistics or biostatistics, epidemiology, computer science, engineering, and related quantitative fields. Individuals with an MD or DO with appropriate supplementary training will also be considered. This expertise will complement the ongoing and future expansion of Dell Medical School's and the Center for Health and Environment: Education and Research's (CHEER) research and teaching mission. Preferred candidates will have specific interest at the intersection of environmental health and community-engaged research, and the search will be administered through Dell Med's Department of Population Health, the academic home of CHEER.

The appointment will commence in the 2025-26 academic year, i.e., starting in the Fall 2025 semester.
