Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific or engineering field such as Environmental Health and Science, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Project Management, Science or equivalent and four (4) years of safety related experience; OR an Associate's degree in an appropriate scientific field such as Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Project Management, Science or equivalent and seven (7) years of direct safety related experience. Valid driver's license is required.
Must participate in a University medical surveillance program and be able to pass a physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment.
Ability to use word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Organization and customer service skills. Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant standards, regulations, and guidelines to the work environment and emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities.
National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) ICS-100 and IS-700 certification required within one year in order to respond to emergency situations in an effective capacity.
Must participate in an emergency on-call program (including after hours) as a condition of employment.
The mental demands of the position require constant interaction with a wide range of personnel, both public safety and non-public safety. This position requires the ability to clearly focus on the overall safety objectives and regulatory compliance of the University as well as address the unique needs of the different business units on a given campus.
Essential Functions and percent of time
85%: Implement, develop, and maintain EHS procedures, policies, programs, and work instructions. Conduct and coordinate EHS inspections, assessments, and audits, including research and instructional laboratory inspections, fume hood inspections, indoor air quality assessments, and other safety and environmental compliance inspections. Identify deficiencies, communicate required corrective actions, prepare reports, track corrective measures, and maintain appropriate documentation.
Perform industrial hygiene (IH) monitoring, sampling, and testing, including air sampling, exposure monitoring, indoor air quality evaluations, and other occupational health assessments as needed. Evaluate workplace hazards and recommend appropriate engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls.
Coordinate EHS initiatives; participate in university committees; and interact with and provide support to administrative, academic, research laboratory, facilities, and other university departments. Provide guidance, technical assistance, and training on EHS programs, regulatory requirements, and safe work practices.
Coordinate university-wide EHS inventories and maintain required records and documentation. Oversee the collection, storage, transportation, and shipping of hazardous materials, dangerous goods, and regulated waste in accordance with applicable requirements. Coordinate with appropriate university personnel regarding sustainability and conservation initiatives, environmental compliance, public health, and sanitation.

5%: Provide services and response for hazardous material releases, spills, odors, and other EHS-related emergency situations. Serve as an emergency responder and periodically on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Support fire and life safety inspections, emergency planning, and related safety activities. Maintain EHS equipment inventory, calibrations, and equipment in a response-ready status. Research, monitor, and evaluate current trends, regulations, and best practices in fire and life safety and emergency response to provide relevant and current guidance.
10%: Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
The physical demands associated with this position include the ability to ascent and descend stairs and ladders, move, transport field equipment, occasionally moving moderate loads (up to 50 pounds), and work in uncomfortable locations such as temperature extremes and occasionally in warehouse or dirty locations.
Must be able to be medically cleared to wear and be fitted for respirator use.
Work schedule is primarily Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May be on call periodically 24 hours/day 7 days/week.`
