Essential Job Duties:
Are you passionate about large animal care and thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment? Our Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center is looking for a dedicated Veterinary Assistant to join our team. In this role, you will be the backbone of patient care, ensuring our large animal patients receive top-tier medical attention, from routine husbandry to critical emergency triage.
Core Responsibilities
Direct Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Hourly Treatments: Execute and document all scheduled treatments, patient monitoring, and husbandry care.
- Emergency Response: Responsible for the initial triage and stabilization support of emergency caseloads.
- Veterinary Support: Assist clinicians during physical examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
- Handling & Restraint: Provide safe and effective animal handling and restraint for a variety of equine and farm animal species.
Operational Excellence & Compliance
- Infectious Disease Control: Strictly adhere to and enforce all hospital Infectious Disease protocols to maintain a safe environment.
- Inventory & Logistics: Assist with inventory control, including supply ordering, purchasing, and stocking.
- Administrative Accuracy: Ensure correct billing for services, monitor treatment flow sheets for accuracy, and maintain detailed patient records.
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
- Equipment Oversight: Maintain medical equipment and manage repair schedules to ensure zero downtime.
- Collaboration: Communicate effectively with ancillary services and other hospital departments to ensure seamless patient transitions and care.
Schedule & Requirements
- Rotations: Participation in a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays.
- On-Call: Ability to participate in an on-call rotation to support after-hours emergency needs.
- Teamwork: A high degree of collaboration and clear communication skills are essential.
- Physical: Perform physical work for extended periods, including lifting up to 70 pounds and safely handling large animals.

- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education:
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as an equine technician in a clinical or referral/tertiary care setting.
- Previous experience in a veterinary teaching hospital environment.
- Proven ability to handle and care for large animals safely and effectively.
- Strong working knowledge of clinical equipment and hospital information systems
Required license or certification:
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
