English as a Second Language (ESL) Foundational Skills classes are designed for adults in the community who want to improve their English to survive in an English-speaking community, to get or maintain a job, or to prepare for academic courses. Day, evening and Saturday classes are available for beginning to low-intermediate proficiency levels on both the Kentfield and Indian Valley campuses.

Online Instruction: All faculty members must be available to provide instruction in the classroom (in person). Please note that the College does not offer online-only teaching assignments.

Essential Functions

Instructors appointed to the part-time temporary pool may be used to cover part-time, temporary and/or substitute openings in the department. Assignments can vary in duration and are not guaranteed. Assignments for Foundational Skills ESL pool instructors include:

  • Teaching all levels and components of ESL Foundational Skills classes to students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds
  • Providing effective classroom or laboratory instruction using methods and materials appropriate to the subject matter
  • Preparing and grading all class assignments and examinations
  • Advising, assisting and evaluating students, evaluating learning outcomes and maintaining regular office hours
  • Participating in departmental and college professional activities and/or committees is welcomed, but not required.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely student records as required
  • Maintaining currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility
  • Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
  • Communicating with excellent written and oral skills in English

Requirements & Desirables

REQUIREMENTS

  1. A Master's degree in TESL, TESOL, Applied Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or Education with a TESL emphasis; or
  2. A Bachelor's degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, Linguistics with a TESL certificate, Applied Linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND a Master's in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, English, Composition, Bilingual/Bicultural Studies, Reading, Speech or any foreign language; or
  3. The equivalent*; and
  4. Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the campus community; and
  5. Possession of a native-speaker fluency in spoken and written English.

If you are currently completing the graduate program that would qualify you for this position and do not yet hold the requisite degree, you must request equivalency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes & Skills)

  • Understanding equity as the recognition of historical and systemic disparities in opportunity and outcomes and providing the resources necessary to address those disparities.
  • Understanding of contemporary equity and diversity concepts and issues in a community college setting.
  • Competencies related to: curriculum & course development; teaching & learning theory; information resources & evaluating student outcomes; and, assisting students to develop critical thinking skills.
  • Currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility and subject matter.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing with a diverse campus community.
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues and members of the campus community.
  • Familiarity with, willingness and ability to use multiple teaching methods including computer-based learning.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to use teaching methods that engage students and encourage them to be motivated self-learners.
  • Knowledge, training and experience with online pedagogy and technology.
  • Evidence of excellent written and oral skills in English.
  • Commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the College of Marin.
