General Statement of Duties:
The ESL Instructor is tasked with delivering high-quality English language instruction to parents or guardians of Worcester Public School students. The instructor uses a differentiated teaching approach to meet the diverse needs of learners at different proficiency levels. By fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, the instructor helps participants improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, thereby enhancing their ability to navigate their roles as parents within the WPS system.
Responsibilities:
- Instructional delivery: Teach English language courses using various instructional methods, including lectures, small group activities, interactive discussions, and practical exercises to engage learners with different learning styles and language proficiency levels.
- Curriculum implementation and adaptation: Implement lesson plans that are aligned with the goals of the program. Adapt the curriculum to meet the specific needs of participants, incorporating differentiated instruction to accommodate varying skill levels.
- Assessment and feedback: Administer pre- and post-tests, as well as formative assessments throughout the program, to evaluate participant progress. Provide personalized feedback to help participants identify strengths and areas for improvement. Track participant progress through these regular assessments, and report outcomes to the Education Program Liaison. Use this data to refine lesson plans and instructional approaches as needed.
- Participant engagement: Encourage active participation from all learners by facilitating discussions, roleplaying exercises, and other interactive learning activities designed to improve language acquisition and confidence.
- Classroom management: Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment by maintaining respectful and productive interactions among participants. Address any challenges that arise during lessons in a supportive manner.
- Multimodal teaching techniques: Incorporate reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities into each lesson to create a comprehensive language-learning experience. Utilize digital tools, printed materials, and hands-on activities to cater to different learning preferences.
- Other duties as assigned, including supporting other staff and representing the organization upon assignment.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Currently licensed/certified in Massachusetts to Teach English as a Second Language with a focus on adult learners.
- Strong understanding of language acquisition principles and methods.
- Ability to tailor teaching methods to different proficiency levels.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with culturally diverse communities.
- Proficiency in Spanish or another second language.
- Reliable access to transportation.
