Offer Description
Duties and responsibilities
- Leading the Chair responsible for the field of Plant Health, whose activities include: development of integrated plant protection technologies; development of strategies and criteria for the control of plant pests (plant diseases and insect pests); insect ecotoxicology; phytopathology; risk assessment; development of innovative, low-risk plant protection products; use of ecosystem services in pest management and pollination; eco-chemical communication; maintenance of collections of plant pests and beneficial organisms, and conducting research based on these collections; interactions among plants, insects, plant pathogens, and microorganisms in the context of integrated pest management and sustainable agriculture.
- Leading and directing the Chair’s research and development activities to ensure excellence and continuous advancement in the field;
- Leading, developing, and organizing teaching in the field of Plant Health;
- Successfully applying for and managing research projects;
- Organizing doctoral studies and ensuring the development of future academic staff and researchers;
- Creating a motivating and inspiring working environment within the Chair;
- Maintaining close communication and cooperation with horticultural and agricultural producers, beekeepers, other stakeholders in the agricultural sector, professional associations, ministries, public and private sector organizations, and the wider public;
- Performing the duties specified in the job description of a professor within the respective field.

Skills/Qualifications
Required education level
Doctoral degree (PhD) or an equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
Required experience
- Scientific and administrative competence required for leading research, development, and educational activities, as well as strong collaboration and communication skills;
- International experience (research collaboration, conferences, professional development, etc.);
- Experience as the head of a research group in the relevant field;
- At least five years of teaching experience at a university, including successful supervision of Master’s and doctoral students;
- Experience in applying for and managing international research and applied research projects.
Required language skills
- English: C1 level (advanced user) – able to understand complex texts, express ideas fluently and precisely, and write well-structured and substantive texts.
- Estonian: C2 level (proficient user) demonstrates near-native command of the language, including the ability to comprehend highly complex texts and express ideas accurately, fluently, and with nuance in both spoken and written communication on any topic.
- An employee employed under an open-ended employment contract who does not speak Estonian must acquire Estonian language proficiency at level B1 within three years and level B2 within five years according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Selection process
Application documents
To participate in the competition, candidates are required to submit the following documents by e-mail to konkurss@emu.ee by September 15, 2026:
- an application to the Rector;
- a copy of the document certifying education and/or academic degree;
- CV (curriculum vitae) and a structured list of scientific publications of recent ten years, in the Estonian Research Information System (ETIS) standard format (up to ten significant publications from the earlier period may be included at will); information on academic work and in-service training done within five recent years shall be enclosed with the CV;
- the candidate for the position of Professor shall submit motivation letter reflecting the candidate’s vision about the development of this specific research field and related international cooperation in the university, and the measures that the candidate is going to take for increasing the level of research and teaching in the field (max 1500 words);
- Researcher ID / ORCID / Google Scholar reference;
- other relevant materials at the discretion of the applicant.
Application documents shall be submitted in Estonian or in English. The candidate for the position of a professor shall submit the application documents in Estonian and English. As an exception, application documents may be submitted in English only, if Estonian is not expected from the position holder. The documents shall be submitted in the written form by e-mail to konkurss@emu.ee.
In case the applicant has obtained higher education in a foreign country, the University will ask for an assessment from the academic recognition information centre (Estonian ENIC/NARIC Centre) on the conformity of the qualification of the applicant to the qualifications required in the position.
Candidates for the position of professor may be required to deliver a public lecture (venia legendi) or to submit a video recording of the public lecture. The director of the institute decides whether the candidate must deliver a public lecture.
