About the role

Exceptional Opportunity: Clinical Fellow in Restorative Dentistry (with Fully Funded PhD and Specialty Training)

Are you an aspiring clinical academic ready to take the first major step in your career?

We are pleased to offer a prestigious and fully funded clinical academic pathway combining a part-time PhD with specialty training in Restorative Dentistry or one of its associated mono-specialities (Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontology).

This unique post provides the rare opportunity to develop as a clinician, teacher and researcher within one of the world’s leading centres for dental and oral health sciences.

Take the First Step in Your Clinical Academic Journey

If you are passionate about Restorative Dentistry, committed to education, and ready to develop as a clinician-scientist, we encourage you to apply.

Join us and shape the future of dental education, research and specialist care.

This is a full time post (40 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

These posts are supported through the generous legacy of Richard Dickinson and Newland Pedley Funds.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. BDS or equivalent primary dental qualification and full GDC registration at the time of application.
  2. Significant Dental Core Training experience sufficient to succeed in national benchmarking for specialty training.
  3. MFDS or equivalent postgraduate qualification and evidence of ongoing CPD.
  4. Clinical experience in Restorative Dentistry appropriate for entry to specialty training, with safe, evidence-based practice and awareness of patient safety/clinical governance.
  5. Teaching experience (or supporting learning) in clinical/academic settings, including assessment and constructive feedback to learners.
  6. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary dental/healthcare teams and with external partners.
  7. Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate teaching, alongside strong organisational skills to manage competing academic/clinical responsibilities; able to work independently and exercise professionalism, diplomacy, and discretion.
  8. Commitment to a clinical academic career in Restorative Dentistry, including motivation to undertake and complete a PhD and specialty training, with a demonstrable commitment to EDI and GDC standards; eligible to work in the UK, and flexible to work across sites.

Desirable criteria

  1. Prior academic or clinical training relevant to Restorative Dentistry and/or successful completion of national benchmarking for specialty training.
  2. Teaching qualification or HEA Fellowship, and experience delivering structured teaching (UG/PG).
  3. Research experience—publications, presentations, or project work; knowledge of research methodologies and ability to design/conduct research, including data analysis.
  4. Involvement in audit, QI, or service evaluation; project management or team-leading skills; ability to contribute to curriculum development/educational innovation.
  5. Evidence of leadership potential and interest in innovation, including digital dentistry or educational enhancement.

We ask all candidates to submit a copy of their CV, and a supporting statement, detailing how they meet the essential criteria listed in the person specification section of the job description. If we receive a strong field of candidates, we may use the desirable criteria to choose our final shortlist, so please include your evidence against these where possible.

We welcome your thoughts on how organisations can create an inclusive environment, including one which supports free speech and the exchange of a wide range of ideas.
