About the opportunity

The Executive Director and General Manager is responsible for the operational delivery of the Centre in China, ensuring alignment with the University's broader Centre in China strategy that is linked to the University's 2032 strategy. The role encompasses strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, program development, governance, and event coordination.

The position leads the Centre's business operations, supports academic and professional portfolios, and fosters relationships with government, industry, alumni, and community partners. It also provides high-level support to the local leadership team and ensures compliance with both Chinese and Australian regulatory frameworks.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and execute business aligned with the University's Centre in China Strategy.
  • Oversee alumni engagement, marketing, and communications activities in-country.
  • Support the development of education, career and employability programs for Chinese international students and returnees.
  • Manage governance, compliance, and reporting to the Board.
  • Coordinate major events including graduations, seminars, and delegations.
  • Maintain positive and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders across China and Australia.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

  • Demonstrated leadership in operational and strategic management within a complex, multi-faceted organisation, preferably in the higher education sector.
  • Proven experience working with foreign universities and governments, particularly in China, India, or Vietnam.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen, including budget oversight and resource allocation.
  • Expertise in intercultural staff supervision, mentoring and development, and performance management.
  • Advanced communication skills in both English and Chinese, with the ability to influence and negotiate across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A collaborative mindset with a focus on delivering outcomes and building long-term partnerships.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a 4-year fixed term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal subject to performance and funding agreement. The appointment is subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment.
