Extra Help Program Specialist (5547
As part of the McNeese P4 program, medical students play an integral role in the planning and execution of various instructional and coached clinical activities. They provide instructional and practical support to ensure participants acquire fundamental skills through hands-on experience, thereby preparing them for future medical training.
Program planning
- Determine the semester schedule in consultation with Dr. El-Amin.
- Select appropriate weekly topics.
- Create Problem-Based Learning (PBL) content related to the selected topics.
- Develop tutor group cases and instructional materials.
- Disseminate information to the P4 contact list as needed through Lesley Barfield.
- Ensure the availability of all necessary medical equipment for clinical skills sessions in coordination with (Dr. Olawaseun - no longer with SIU - designated person will administrate).
- Collaborate with appropriate personnel to reserve tutor rooms, MCLI and PDL, the Pearson museum lobby, and the South Auditorium for the entire semester.
- Create volunteer sign-ups and schedules.
- Schedule volunteer meetings to orient volunteers for each session.
- Brainstorm potential clinical skills sessions that align with the systems being studied.
- Draft topics and proposed clinical skills sessions to ensure alignment with the educational goals of the program in collaboration with Dr. Wendi El-Amin and Dr. Oluwaseun Adeleke or designee).
- Meet with Dr. El-Amin for final decisions on the day-to-day schedule for each module.
Facilitation of Training
- Lead and facilitate tutor group cases: During the first meeting of the module, tutor leaders escort students from the auditorium to the tutor rooms.
- Facilitate work through of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) case with High School students: Physical exam maneuvers are taught in conjunction with clinically relevant applications in the Professional Development Lab (PDL).
- Support designated faculty members in clinical skills stations to guide students through clinical procedures.
Administrative support
- Assist with the interview process for P4 applicants.
- Help with the setup of the training environment, including arranging manikins, simulation tools, and other instructional aids.
- Manage the flow of sessions and providing information to P4 students as necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of participant attendance and performance.
Mentorship and Feedback
- Collaborate with faculty by contributing ideas and observations to enhance the learning experience.
- Participate in post-assessment review sessions, offering insights on participant progress.
- Serve as mentors for P4 students to sustain their interest and participation in the program and future medical training.
