Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director- Architectural Trades & Auto Services, the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, assigned to the Carpentry Shop within the Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations, works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Facilities Project Supervisor. The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic performs the full range of skilled journey level carpentry and metalworking trades along with strong skills in other trade areas to perform a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction and renovation work on building and infrastructure systems. Typically, carpentry and metal work skills are utilized to maintain and repair equipment and systems associated with university buildings and infrastructure to ensure a clean, safe and attractive campus/learning environment. The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance system to ensure the preventive maintenance program objectives are met and provides safety instructions and directions to unskilled or semi-skilled assistants.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs at a journey level in at least one trade and assists with basic and advanced level maintenance and repair work for various trades including carpentry, metal work, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical
- Build, remodel, and maintain various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, fences and other structures
- Interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications including making rough sketches where needed to facilitate work efforts
- Perform routine mechanical maintenance
- Respond to service requests; diagnose problems and make necessary adjustments
- Operate hand/power tools and certified equipment such as scissor lifts, forklifts, utility carts, and welding equipment
- Use computerized maintenance management programs to complete work assignments including documentation of efforts but also as necessary to research and understand issues at hand
- Estimates cost, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work
- Responds to urgent and/or emergency calls in order to prevent catastrophic equipment failure, injury, damage or further incident, takes appropriate action to mitigate damages and facilitate appropriate repair
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities
- Ability to climb to a height in excess of thirty feet
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and tools used in one of the skilled trades associated with the plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or HVAC & System Controls trades
- Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems including building and system level utilities and infrastructure, and renovations
- Ability to demonstrate journey-level skill in one of the skilled trades and strong skills in other applicable trades
- Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications
- Ability to make rough sketches and to estimate the cost, time and materials of assigned work
- Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
- Ability to operate all applicable tools, equipment and systems necessary to perform skilled trade
- Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems
- Ability to organize assigned work and carry forward assignments based on operational priorities as defined by the appropriate administrator and/or operating guidelines with a focus on efficiently performing duties required to complete assignments successfully and within given deadlines
- Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals throughout the organization as well as those outside of the organization who are directly or indirectly involved with projects and/or assignments
Required Qualifications
- Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities maintenance mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
- Requires the possession of a valid California Driver’s License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation
- Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations
License
A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
- Journey level standing in the carpentry and/or metal working trades
- Knowledge of welding and fabrication techniques commonly used in a maintenance and repair setting
- Five years of journey level work experience in the maintenance, repair, or construction/fabrication, and installation of carpentry or metal work systems associated with buildings and grounds
Compensation
Classification: Facilities Maintenance Mechanic
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,274/month - $6,528/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month
