Facilities Maintenance Mechanic
Job Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic performs a wide range of skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work. This role functions as a skilled generalist, utilizing journey-level expertise in one or more trades such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or carpentry. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining facilities, infrastructure, and utility systems to ensure a safe, functional, and efficient environment for research and learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and installation work across multiple trades (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry)
- Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair building systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water, and utility systems
- Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment and system issues using building automation and computerized maintenance systems
- Respond to emergency repair needs to prevent equipment failure, damage, or safety hazards
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with safety codes and regulations
- Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical specifications
- Maintain accurate records of work performed using computerized systems
- Operate tools, equipment, and vehicles such as lifts, forklifts, and maintenance equipment (as certified)
- Provide guidance and instruction to unskilled or semi-skilled assistants
- Maintain clean and safe work environments and follow all safety protocols
