Position Overview
The Facilities Maintenance Technician supports Butler University's campus by performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance duties across multiple building systems and trade areas. Working under the direction of the T.E.M.P. Shop Supervisor, this position helps ensure campus facilities remain safe, functional, and well-maintained through preventive maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, and installations.
Responsibilities may include plumbing, electrical, HVAC, data communications, fire alarm systems, campus utilities, building automation systems, swimming pool operations, preventive maintenance, event support, and minor construction projects. Assignments are based on the employee's knowledge, skills, certifications, and operational needs.
This is a second shift opportunity from 2:30pm-11:00pm.
Responsibilities
- Respond to work orders involving diagnosis, repair, replacement, new installations, preventive maintenance, and minor construction projects.
- Perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work across multiple building systems and trade disciplines.
- Troubleshoot maintenance issues and complete repairs in accordance with established safety and operational procedures.
- Assist experienced technicians with larger or more complex maintenance assignments as needed.
- Communicate professionally with faculty, staff, students, and campus visitors while providing excellent customer service.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete assigned work in a timely manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Work various shifts and overtime as required.
- Serve as an essential staff member and report to work during University closures or periods of inclement weather when required.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a skilled trade, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or data communications.
- Commercial maintenance experience required.
Required Certifications
- OSHA 10 certification required.
- Lock Out/Tag Out training required.
- CFC Certification required for HVAC trade.
- Certified Pool Operator certification required for pool operations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Candidates must be able to:
- Use computers and iPads at a basic level.
- Update maintenance records.
- Safely operate hand and power tools applicable to the trade.
- Read, understand, and follow safety procedures.
- Understand and follow detailed instructions and established work procedures.
- Successfully pass a physical exam and lift test.
Additional experience and certifications may qualify candidates for higher-level positions.
Driving Requirements
Positions requiring the operation of a University-owned, leased, rented, or personal vehicle must receive approval for the University's insured driver list before a final employment offer can be extended.
To comply with the standards established by the University's insurance carrier, Butler University reserves the right to deny or restrict driving privileges for individuals who have:
- Been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, impaired, or under the influence of drugs.
- Been charged with moving traffic violations or parking citations within the past three years.
- Had a driver's license suspended for any reason.
- Been involved in a vehicular accident within the past three years.
