Job Summary:
University Housing Facilities is looking for Facilities Technicians II to join our Team!
Our Facilities Technicians II staff provide levels of service in the areas of grounds, trades, and/or maintenance for residents and guests. The primary function of the positions is for direct service requests in occupied residential spaces and for the ongoing repair/project work between occupancies related to upkeep of our residential and community spaces. Additionally, these positions are responsible for maintaining the safety and esthetics of 86 acres including greenspace, recreation areas, parking lots, roadways and 7 miles of sidewalks. They provide tree maintenance and monitor the health and safety of our trees to minimize property damage and risks to residents. In the winter, this team maintains all roadways, parking lots and sidewalks to ensure safe passage for residents. These positions are key to maintaining acceptable service standards for those who call University Housing home.
Work Schedule:
- Multiple vacancies may be available
- Typical scheduled shifts are between 7:00am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, 8-hour shifts, for total of 40 hours per week.
Work schedule will be set with selected finalist(s) at time of offer. Schedule alterations as operations and position expectations demand.

Key Job Responsibilities:
- Performs routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness
- Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed
- Utilizes equipment to repair and maintain standard machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation
- Receives, inspects, inventories, and distributes deliveries to appropriate entities under general supervision
- Maintains interior and exterior facilities, grounds, and walkways, including interior and exterior routine repairs below the skilled/licensed trades level in occupied and vacant spaces.
- Troubleshoots, escalates, and documents issues according to established policies and procedures

Housing Facilities is part of the Division of University Housing at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Our team is responsible for the full spectrum of two distinct facilities operations, which include housekeeping, mechanical maintenance, infrastructure repairs and renewal, and long‑term capital planning, for both undergraduate students and graduate students and their families living with us. As a student service organization, Housing Facilities advances the university’s mission by delivering safe, well-maintained living and learning environments.
The Residence Halls, consisting of 30 buildings and 2 million square feet, houses approximately 8,000 undergraduate students during the academic year and welcomes more than 18,000 conference and program guests each summer. In addition to living spaces, our operations support a wide range of programs and functions, including classrooms, office spaces, dining and culinary operations, marketplace venues, meeting rooms, and event spaces.
University Apartments provides housing to an average of 2,500 residents in 1,240 apartments, serving a diverse community of graduate students, staff, and their families. The University Apartments community is located on over 80 acres of greenspace and also includes a large community center with a Housing-operated licensed early childhood education program.
While most of our front-line staff and supervisors are hired with a primary unit location to serve residents and guests, specific to their role, our facilities team is committed to remaining flexible enough to support each other and our operations as needed throughout the year.
Compensation:
The starting hourly wage is $22.00 or higher based on qualifications with a competitive retirement and benefits package, including vacation, holidays, and paid time off. Benefits information can be found at (https://hr.wisc.edu/benefits/)
University Staff also earn additional money when working at night (6:00pm to 6:00am) and on weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Additional $2.50/hour for nighttime work on weekdays, up to $2.50/hour for daytime weekend work, and up to $3.30/hour for nighttime weekend work.
Current UW-Madison employees may be eligible to be hired up to their current rate of compensation, based on qualifications.
Required Qualifications:
- 1 year grounds, landscape maintenance, or snow removal
- Drivers License – Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 or more years of grounds, landscape maintenance, snow removal or related experience
- Experience operating a skid steer for snow removal and/or landscape maintenance
- Experience operating a F250 or 350 sized plow truck for snow removal
- Experience with basic residential-related repairs
Education:
High School diploma preferred
