Position Announcement

The American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Program at Utah Valley University invites applications for a full-time Tenure Track Assistant Professor position to begin Fall Semester 2026. The ASL and Deaf Studies Program is in the Department of Languages and Cultures in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. This position presents an excellent opportunity to play a vital role in a well-established program that offers a comprehensive range of over fifty courses, catering to multiple degree options. Pay will depend on qualifications.

Workload expectations will consist of teaching (80%), research (10%), and service (10%). The position carries a teaching and load of 24 credit hours per academic year, typically 12 credits per semester (4/4). The appointee may be assigned some administrative duties, for example, ASL & Deaf Studies Program Coordinator, which would reduce teaching load. The appointee will design and teach courses using appropriate methods to meet clearly stated course objectives in line with institutional objectives. Instruction may be face-to-face, online, or hybrid formats as assigned.

Summary of Responsibilities

• Teaches a variety of upper and lower-division courses in the ASL & Deaf Studies program as assigned. Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study that includes measurable learning objectives for each course taught. Prepares instructional materials. Evaluates student performance using appropriate testing and grading procedures. Teaching is the primary emphasis of this role.
• Provides service to the program, department, college, university, and community. Will be part of the faculty team overseeing the ASL & Deaf Studies program, contributing to curriculum adjustments, strategic planning, and assessment efforts.
• Engages in scholarly activities, including research, and produces scholarly/creative work consistent with the academic goals of the department.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

A Ph.D. in Deaf Studies or a related field with a research focus related to Deaf cultures and/or signed languages is required. Related fields include, but are not limited to, anthropology, linguistics, history, education, geography, political science, sociology, and others. Applicants who have completed coursework toward a Ph.D. and who have made considerable progress toward the completion of the dissertation may be considered; however, the Ph.D. must be conferred before the date of hire. Candidates must have native or native-like fluency in American Sign Language and be fluent in (written) English, be prepared in basic teaching pedagogy, and be willing to teach courses associated with the American Sign Language & Deaf Studies Program. Intimate and extensive experience in the Deaf-World is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous college-level teaching experience.
• Training in specialty areas and teaching competency in areas that complement current faculty specialties as part of an interdisciplinary program in Deaf Studies.
• Experience teaching across various platforms, i.e., face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid.
• Established track record of presentations at Deaf Studies conferences and of peer-reviewed publishing.
