Faculty Associate - Research
The Physics Department of the Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for a research assistant/associate position with experience in one or several areas of optics, lasers, material science and characterization, sensors, directed energy, physics, or related fields. Exceptional candidates may be considered for appointment at a more senior level. Applicants must show a history of work in these or closely aligned areas. The official position title is defined as “Faculty Associate – Research.”
The Physics Department is part of the Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, which has a long history of excellence in the areas of directed energy technologies. The Physics Department has active research programs in directed energy research, including modeling of propagation and material interactions, atmospheric sensing, and material characterization. This position would support growing research programs in one or more of these areas. As an employee of the Naval Postgraduate School, the incumbent would also have the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in a related field.
Minimum qualifications:
- A B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in an engineering or related technical fields, with a preference for candidates with a background in physics, chemistry, optics, sensors, or material science.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in laser systems, laser/material interactions, and the characterization of materials (including their thermal and optical properties), as well as hands-on experience with spectroscopy—particularly Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy—and LabVIEW.
- Must currently hold or be eligible for a Secret clearance.
- U.S. citizenship required.
