Background of the recruitment and description of the project
The Graduate School of Social Data Science (SDS) at Hitotsubashi University has been selected for MEXT’s “Capacity Enhancement Support Project for Universities and Colleges of Technology” (support for capacity enhancement to secure advanced information professionals), and is building an education and research hub in “Social Data Science,” an interdisciplinary field integrating the social sciences and data science. The School established its master’s program in April 2023, established a doctoral program in April 2025, and plans to increase its master’s program enrollment quota in FY2027 (from 21 to 36 students), requiring further strengthening of its education and research system. As part of this project, this recruitment seeks a faculty member who will pursue international, data-driven empirical research (including quantitative, computational, and qualitative methods) on the institutions, organizations, policies, or social processes surrounding science, technology, innovation, R&D, and knowledge production, and who will contribute to the School’s education, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Applicants’ disciplinary background is not restricted, but the following fields are primarily envisioned.
- Core fields: science, technology and innovation policy; economics of science, technology and innovation; scientometrics (including bibliometrics and informetrics); computational social science
- Related fields: research policy; policy science; innovation studies; knowledge economics; quantitative research on scientific activity itself (the “science of science”); research evaluation; quantitative science and technology studies (STS); sociology of science; history and philosophy of science; information science; etc.

Work content and job description
Teaching
- Undergraduate: data-science-related courses (including seminars)
- Master’s program courses: e.g., “Advanced Topics in Social Data Science,” “ELSI of Data Science”
- Doctoral program courses: e.g., “SDS Research Methodology I (Responsible Research and Innovation),” “SDS Research Methodology II (R&D Management),” “SDS Collaborative Project Seminar”
Teaching load: full-time: approximately 2 courses per week (excluding seminars,etc.)
Research and Social Contribution
- Advancing quantitative, computational, and qualitative empirical research on science, technology, innovation, and knowledge production
- Conducting joint research through industry-academia-government collaboration platforms
- Actively pursuing external research funding
University Administration
- Participation in various in-house committees (including entrance examination duties)
- Other duties necessary for university administration

Annual salary: 5 million yen

The salary figure is for reference only and will be determined based on career and other factors in accordance with the University's salary regulations.
Please note that additional allowances for obtaining competitive funding and for international research performance are excluded from the reference amount.

Break time: 12:00-13:00
Holidays: Days off include Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, year-end and New Year days and other days as designated by the university president.
※Where classes must be held on Saturdays, Sundays, etc. due to curricular requirements, a compensatory holiday may be substituted.
Overtime and other explanations: Workhours are considered to be 7 hours and 45 minutes per weekday, totaling 38 hours and 45 minutes per week, in accordance with the Discretionary Work System for Professional Work.
The standard workweek consists of five days a week, Monday through Friday.

- At Hitotsubashi University, the Japanese titles “Kōshi” and “Jun-Kyōju” correspond to the English titles “Assistant Professor” and “Associate Professor,” respectively.
