Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Qatar invites applications for a teaching-track faculty position in Computational Biology, starting in Fall 2025. The appointment is at the rank of assistant professor, but candidates with substantial teaching experience and significant research impact may be considered for higher levels.

The position involves a reasonable teaching load, providing faculty with the opportunity to actively conduct research and engage in academic activities, including student advising, outreach, curriculum development, and experimentation with new teaching methodologies.

Funds are available from CMU and national agencies to support research agendas. Candidates are encouraged to apply for research grants, recruit students and postdocs, and lead high-quality research projects.

This position is based at CMU’s branch campus in Doha, Qatar and offers a competitive salary, seed fund for research, attractive professional development support, excellent international health care coverage, and allowances for housing, travel, and schooling, if eligible, alongside other benefits. The successful candidate will be encouraged to spend one semester in the main campus in Pittsburgh, USA at the beginning of their appointment. Subsequent visits to the main campus for collaborations are incentivized and supported.

The several thousand students in the Education City are a broad mix of nationalities, but primarily from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. CMUQ’s faculty is a mix of professionals hired specifically for this campus and seconded by faculty from the main campus. CMUQ’s primary focus is undergraduate education in Business Administration, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, and Information Systems.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Carnegie Mellon University is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its community on a range of intellectual, cultural, and social dimensions. Carnegie Mellon welcomes faculty applicants who will contribute to this diversity through their research, teaching, and service, including women, members of minority groups, protected veterans, individuals with disabilities, and others who would contribute in different ways.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Computer Science, or related field, with outstanding academic credentials. The position expects strong interest and commitment to teaching, mentoring, and supporting students at the undergraduate level. It involves teaching classes in CompBio and introduction to programming. Besides being excellent educators, candidates are expected to actively engage in activities such as research, outreach, advising, and/or curriculum development.

The deadline for submission of applications is October 20, 2024. Applications received afterwards will be considered if the position is not filled. Candidates must submit their applications electronically at: http://apply.interfolio.com/155105.

An initial application must include: 1. A cover letter that summarizes the candidate’s academic achievements, research work, suitability to teach courses in CompBio and programming, and potential to provide high-quality education to undergraduate students. 2. A curriculum vitae (including a publication list). 3. A teaching statement that explains the candidate’s teaching philosophy and experience (maximum 2 pages). 4. A research statement that explains the candidate's research interests and plans to engage undergraduate students in research projects (maximum 2 pages). 5. A diversity statement that explains how the candidate’s personal, academic, and professional experiences position them to address issues of diversity and inclusion in their teaching and mentoring of diverse students (maximum 2 pages).

Upon initial screening of the applications, each short-listed candidate will be asked to provide: 1. An introductory 2-minute video summarizing their experience. 2. The contact information of at least three individuals who can provide confidential letters of reference.
