FACULTY POSITIONS IN ENGLISH LITERATURE
(Open-rank Tenure-Track)
The College of Integrative Studies (CIS) at Singapore Management University (SMU) was established in 2022. The CIS is a community of interdisciplinary scholars who contribute to the delivery of the University’s Core Curriculum for all undergraduate students and also offers the nation’s only individualised major. Both missions emphasise the importance of integrating ideas and perspectives across the disciplines associated with the other SMU Schools (Accountancy, Business, Economics, Computing, Law, and Social Sciences), with a particular focus on SMU’s Strategic Priorities.
We are looking to fill one full-time Faculty position in Asian, World or Comparative Literature on either the tenure-track or education-track, with a preference for Associate/Full Professor. The field is broadly defined, and we have a preference for scholars who can thrive in an interdisciplinary setting.
Candidates who have prior experience in academic leadership roles at a University-level writing Centre or developing Writing courses for an undergraduate Core Curriculum are especially encouraged to apply.
Expectations of the role include:
- Publishing in top-tier journals and applying for competitive funding awards.
- Providing academic direction and stewardship for the Centre for English Communication (CEC)
- Designing and delivering academic writing or creative writing courses, and/or other courses in the University Core Curriculum.
- Advising CIS students on their Bachelor of integrative Studies (BIS) programmes, a ‘design-your-own’ Major (and Second Major).
- Providing service to the College and University by serving on committees, participating in events, outreach and admissions activities and, where appropriate, engagement with industry/academic stakeholders.
Applicants must:
- Already hold or expect to be awarded a PhD in a relevant discipline by the time of hire;
- Have a strong track record in publications and grant getting, commensurate with their current level;
- Have prior experience with a University-level academic writing centre;
- Have evidence of excellence in teaching and be willing to engage in or develop innovative pedagogy
- For applicants at the level of Full Professor, a strong track record of substantive grant awards and high impact research is essential.
Applicants should apply online (SMU Careers) with the following documents in PDF format:
- a cover letter
- a curriculum vitae
- a statement of teaching philosophy
- a research statement
- a service statement
- teaching evaluations
- samples of up to three research papers
Applicants should also arrange for three academic reference letters to be sent directly to cisjobs@smu.edu.sg if selected for interview.
Applicants are encouraged to apply by 1 March 2026, when review of applications will begin. Interviews will be anticipated for April or early May at the latest. The expected start date is 1 August 2026, or otherwise as mutually agreed. Applications will be treated with strict confidentiality and only short-listed candidates will be notified.
At SMU, we celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
