Field Archaeologist (Fixed Term)

The Cambridge Archaeological Unit, part of the Department of Archaeology, is recruiting Field Archaeologists for archaeological excavations, evaluations, and surveys throughout East Anglia. Sites include prehistoric landscapes, Iron Age and Roman settlements, and urban sites.

The CAU has sites scheduled for Summer 2025 to Spring 2026, including evaluations and large-scale excavations. Positions are on 12-month fixed-term contracts.

Field Staff will assist in delivering fieldwork services to professional standards and deadlines. There are 8 posts available.

Requirements:

  • A degree in Archaeology is essential; related degrees require sufficient practical excavation experience.
  • Demonstrate interest and knowledge of British Archaeology with fieldwork experience, such as training excavations or commercial archaeology.
  • Able to work professionally with colleagues and the public.
  • Fast learners capable of following archaeological briefs, CIfA best practices, H&S legislation, and client deadlines.

Preferred qualifications include a clean UK/EU Driving Licence, CIfA membership, First Aid at Work, or other H&S qualifications.

Highlight projects, fieldwork skills, and interests in period specialisms, artefacts, environmental archaeology, illustration, or survey. Opportunities for skill development with training provided.

Roles are full-time, with start by 30 September 2025. Funding is for 12 months. Successful candidates will undergo a health assessment.
