Position Summary

The Defensive and Special Teams Coordinator for Men’s Football is responsible for assisting in all aspects of administration and operation of the competitive NCAA, Division III Football Program in the Empire 8 athletic conference at SUNY Cortland which includes skill instruction, on-field coaching, player development, team travel, management of coaching and support staff, student athlete academic success and student athlete health and welfare.

This is a full-time position with an 11-month obligation (8/1-6/30 annually).

Salary Range: $65,000 + depending on experience (DOE)

Major Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the implementation of the defensive scheme and all game day defensive play calling.
  • Responsible for the implementation of special teams scheme and game day plans.
  • Scout opponents, which includes analyzing game footage, statistics, and strategies of the opposing team to prepare for games.
  • Assist the head coach with all matters pertaining to the total operation of the men’s football program at SUNY Cortland.
  • Maintain and/or build the sport program that is competitive at the conference level.
  • Recruit prospective student-athletes in accordance with the NCAA, Empire 8 and SUNY Cortland rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Recruit adequate numbers of student-athletes with sufficient skill to be as competitive as possible within the guidelines set by the NCAA and the policies and procedures of Empire 8 and SUNY Cortland.
  • Assist in academic performance of student-athletes with regard to ongoing eligibility, academic monitoring and academic retention.
  • Provide general advising, mentoring and support to student-athletes.
  • Demonstrate effective coaching through content knowledge, practice construction and execution, and the affective dimension (e.g., interpersonal interactions, enthusiasm, respect and rapport).
  • Demonstrate effective teaching and advising (i.e., instruct student athletes in how to perform in their sport and at the college level; instruct student athletes in physical health (strength, conditioning & skill training); instruct individual/team concepts, and safety.
  • Implement appropriate risk management strategies at all times.
  • Demonstrate concern for the overall welfare of student athletes at all times.
  • Ensure all documentation and paperwork is completed in a timely fashion.
  • Represent the College in a professional and ethical manner, modeling outstanding sportsmanship, consistent with SUNY Cortland mission, vision and campus priorities.
  • Demonstrate continued growth and development in sport by continuing education, participation in professional organizations, enrollment in training programs, and research.
  • Supervise athletes and monitor the facilities including the weight room to ensure student-athlete safety.
  • Execute all of these responsibilities as assistant coach in a manner that reflects an ongoing commitment to the excellence, integrity and success of the men’s football program; the Athletics Department and SUNY Cortland.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

  • Reports to the Head Football Coach.
  • Supervises assistant coaches and volunteers.
  • Works closely with athletic trainers, athletic support staff, and assistant athletic directors.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching football at the college level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • 3 or more years of experience coaching in an intercollegiate or professional football program.
  • Supervisory experience.

  • A strong identification with and support of SUNY Cortland mission, vision and campus priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of SUNY Cortland, SUNY System, the NCAA and Empire 8.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively – via technology, in person, and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the department and college in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgement based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions, and other outcomes.
