Essential Job Duties:
NC State Dining is seeking a Food Service Supervisor to support the success of a Starbucks or PCJ Coffeeshop on the campus of NC State. The Food Service Supervisor plays a vital role in the daily management of the coffee shop. This position ensures high-quality service and an exceptional experience for students, faculty, staff, and guests. The ideal candidate is committed-both philosophically and operationally-to delivering efficient, high-quality service while being attentive and responsive to the unique needs of the campus community.
Positions Available:
We are hiring for two positions at Social Fabrics and Talley Port City Java.
Work Schedules:
- Social Fabrics: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
- Talley Port City Java: Sunday-Thursday, 1:00 PM - 9:30 PM
In this fast-paced, hands-on role, the supervisor upholds all NC State Dining standards related to customer service, food and beverage quality, and compliance with established university policies and procedures. This is a working supervisory position, and supervisors are expected to lead service during peak periods.
Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Supervise daily coffee shop operations, including oversight of student and/or temporary employees.
- Lead by example in delivering excellent customer service and maintaining high standards for food and beverage quality.
- Ensure consistent adherence to all NC State Dining policies, procedures, and operational standards.
- Create employee schedules and coordinate daily staff assignments to meet operational needs.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with team members, customers, and leadership.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work environment following university and departmental guidelines.
- Support the training, development, and ongoing coaching of staff to promote teamwork and service excellence.
- Respond to daily operational challenges with professionalism, sound judgment, and adaptability.
Physical Requirements
This role requires physical stamina, including the ability to:
- Lift 30 pounds above the head and up to 60 pounds on rare occasions (with or without reasonable accommodations).
- Work in both hot and cold environments.
- Safely handle sharp tools, hot equipment, and other kitchen or cafe hazards.

Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Model the Division's mission and values, introduce the Division's mission and values to the employees, and foster a positive, cohesive workplace and congeniality among co-workers.
- Understand the goals and culture of the organization, and understand how employees' work activities, teamwork, and customer service impact clients. Work with your supervisor and colleagues to understand these goals and the culture.
- Adhere to all University policies, procedures, and regulations, and Division standard operating practices and protocols.
- Due to operational needs of the NC State Dining department, an employee may be assigned to work in any NC State Dining department including, but not limited special events.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure NC State Dining business needs are met.
Minimum Experience/Education:
High School diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in food preparation or service activities in a commercial kitchen; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous supervisory experience in high volume coffee shop, food service, hospitality, or a related field including hiring, training, employee relations, coaching and team building
- Knowledge of equipment, cooking methods, measurements, food sanitation, safety and health codes
- Proficient in the use of computers and have the ability to learn new software programs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with customers, peers and supervisors; and professionally communicate with multiple levels of employees within the University.
- Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
Required license or certification:
- ServSafe certification or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
- Must obtain Brand specific certification, if applicable, as required by location within 30 days of employment.
