From ideal to real: Simulation study of laser-plasma imaging performance for future industrial imaging

About the Project

Department: Physics and Astronomy

Research Group: Accelerator Physics Group

Institution: University of Manchester

Application deadline: Open

Start date: October 2026

Duration: 3.5 years (full-time)

Funding: Fully funded STFC studentship / UK rate tuition fees + stipend

Join the University of Manchester’s Accelerator Physics Group and help shape the future of compact X-ray and gamma-ray technology. This exciting PhD project explores how powerful lasers interacting with plasma can generate ultra-fast, high-energy light — opening new possibilities for imaging in science, medicine, and industry.

You will use advanced computer simulations to investigate and optimise novel X-ray generation techniques, comparing their performance and stability to guide the design of next-generation sources. The project offers opportunities to collaborate with, and potentially test your work at, leading UK research facilities including CLARA/FEBE at Daresbury Laboratory and EPAC at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

As a member of the Cockcroft Institute, you will work within a national network of accelerator scientists and benefit from specialist training, collaboration, and access to world-class research infrastructure.

Training and Development

As part of this PhD, you will:

  • Gain in-depth experience in computational and theoretical plasma physics.
  • Develop expertise in high-performance computing and advanced simulation tools.
  • Work as part of the Cockcroft Institute, collaborating with leading UK universities, national laboratories, and international partners.
  • Receive training in research methods, data analysis, and scientific communication.
  • Participate in seminars, workshops, and networking opportunities across the UK accelerator physics community.

About the Research Environment

The Accelerator Physics Group at the University of Manchester is internationally recognised for its pioneering work in laser–plasma acceleration, advanced radiation sources, and beam dynamics. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the UK’s largest and most active physics departments, providing an outstanding environment for postgraduate research.

As a member of the Cockcroft Institute, you will join a national collaboration that brings together researchers from the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster, and Strathclyde, as well as STFC’s Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) at Daresbury Laboratory.

Eligibility and Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) a first-class or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a closely related discipline.

Experience or interest in computational physics, plasma physics, or accelerator science would be an advantage but is not essential.

Funding Notes

This studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years, covering UK rate tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate.

How to Apply

To apply, please submit:

  • A full CV
  • Academic transcripts
  • A short personal statement (maximum one page) outlining your research interests and motivation

Applications should be made through the Cockcroft Institute webpage. For full consideration for funded awards, please apply by Jan 31st 2026.

For informal enquiries, please contact oznur.apsimon@manchester.ac.uk.
