From Supply Chains to Supply Ecosystems
About the Project
One of the key characteristics of an ecosystem is that each member must create value for itself, but not at the expense of the larger ecosystem. Hence, organizations may sometimes have to sacrifice their individual goals for the greater good while at the same time benefitting for example from the development of new sourcing processes to improve their product development and product quality performance.
This development resulted in a shift from supply chains to supply ecosystems requiring close coordination of different activities across national boundaries providing them with the opportunity of accumulating experiential knowledge abroad while operating in an ecosystem with other members not only to reduce risk but importantly to improve for example customer responsiveness, develop innovative products and processes, and market innovations more effectively.
This PhD project will examine how organizations can master complex human interactions in supply chain ecosystems that translate into challenges regarding among others value creation and the pooling of knowledge and skills across the ecosystem and its members while dealing with disruptive technologies. This results in the need for agile delivery ecosystem especially in relationship to digital transformation projects.
By taking an orchestration perspective, this research will provide insights and tools for cooperation between members, the pooling of their knowledge and skills across the system to better serve the customer/client and to have each member benefit from it while ensuring agile delivery. This is particularly important in the era where many organizations across different sectors are involved in digital transformations with increased need for innovation for example in the delivery of digital services.
