Full-duplex underwater acoustic systems

Acoustic signal transmission is the only feasible technology for long-range (>10-100m) underwater communication, navigation and sonar systems. The performance of such systems could be significantly improved if it was possible simultaneously transmit and receive signals in the same frequency band, which is called full-duplex (FD) operation. If implemented, the FD could directly double the capacity of communication systems. With sonars and underwater navigation systems, there are even more benefits from using this approach. However, the main obstacle for FD implementation is the self-interference in the received signal (due to the high transmitted power) that can be as high as 100 dB with respect to the received signal. Recently, FD in radio communications has attracted much interest. Specifically, techniques for cancelling the self-interference have been advanced so that, for some communication scenarios, the FD with almost double capacity became a possibility. The aim of this project is to develop and test FD techniques that can be efficiently used for underwater communication, navigation and sonars. This activity will be based on using underwater channel models developed in the Underwater Information Systems Group at York, and recent results on development and experimental investigation of underwater acoustic techniques and devices within this Group. The student should be well familiar with signal processing techniques, corresponding mathematics and Matlab programming. The techniques developed in the project will be tested in the university water tank, lake and sea experiments.

It is also possible to do this research as a MSc by Research project.
