High data rate adaptive underwater acoustic networks

About the Project

The ocean plays a key role in supporting all living organisms on our planet, yet the vast majority of the ocean remains unmapped and unobserved. Any activity underwater requires reliable communications, and the most feasible is the underwater communication exploiting acoustic waves. Unfortunately, modern underwater acoustic communication networks have relatively low throughput, while many practical applications require high data rates. This project aims to develop novel techniques to increase the network throughputs using modern communication technologies. Among them are NOMA (non-orthogonal multiple access), multiuser interference cancellation, MIMO (multiple-input multiple-out), full-duplex transmission, and others. This activity will be based on using underwater channel models developed in the Underwater Information Systems Group at York, and recent results on development and experimental investigation of underwater acoustic techniques and devices. The student should be well familiar with mathematics related to communications and Matlab programming. The techniques developed in the project will be tested in the university water tank, lake, and sea experiments.

It is also possible to do this research as a MSc by Research project.
