Following my Order issued on 11th August 2026, by delegated power under Ordinance no. 10012/2026 published In the Official Gazette (Diário da República), 2nd series, no. 153 of 10 August, this call for applications is published for one position of Full Professor to the disciplinary area of Physics Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. The application procedure will remain in force for a period of thirty working days as from the working day immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Official Gazette.

1. Applicable legal provisions

Articles 37 to 51, 61 and 62-A of the Statute of the University Teaching Career (ECDU – Estatuto da Carreira Docente Universitária), republished by Decree-Law No. 205/2009, of 31 August, and amended by Law No. 8/2010, of 13 May, and the Regulation for the Recruitment of Full, Associate and Assistant Professors of the University of Porto (hereinafter referred to as Regulation), approved by Order No. 12913/2010, published in the Official Gazette, 2nd series, no. 154, of 10 August and amended by Resolution (extract) no. 380/2019, published in the Official Gazette, 2nd series, no. 64, of 1 April.

2. Eligible candidates

Hold a PhD degree for more than five years, counted until the previous day of the deadline for submission of applications, and of the aggregate title, under the terms of article 40 of the Statute of the University Teaching Career (ECDU).

Holders of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must have their doctoral degree recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution under Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August, in its current wording, by the deadline for signing the contract.

3. Approval on absolute merit

3.1. In the absence of grounds for rejecting the applications, the Jury will deliberate on their approval or non-approval on absolute merit, by justified nominal vote, abstentions not being permitted.

3.2. A candidate is considered to have passed on absolute merit if they are approved by an absolute majority of the voting jury members.

3.3. The approval of candidates on absolute merit depends on possessing a comprehensive curriculum that the jury considers, with due justification, to have scientific and pedagogical merit, research capacity, and developed activity, compatible with the disciplinary area for which the competition was opened and appropriate to the respective teaching category, as documented in the information submitted to the competition.

3.4. For the purposes of the evaluation referred to in the previous point, a favorable vote must be based on the cumulative fulfillment of the following qualitative and quantitative circumstances or requirements:

1. The candidate must hold a PhD or title of aggregate in the disciplinary area of Physics Engineering or related areas;
2. The candidate must possess a curriculum vitae whose merit, according to the jury members, demonstrates scientific and pedagogical merit, research capacity, and developed activity compatible with the disciplinary area and category for which the competition is open;
3. The candidate must have a minimum of 50 articles indexed in ISI Web of Knowledge or Scopus;

4. Evaluation and ranking on relative merit

Once the candidates approved on absolute merit have been definitively identified, they are ranked on relative merit, based on the aspects and criteria for ranking, their respective weighting and final assessment system, established in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 6 of article 50 of the ECDU and article 14 of the Regulation.

4.1. Evaluation methodology

Candidates approved on absolute merit are subject to a curricular assessment, which may be complemented by a public presentation hearing, to which candidates approved on absolute merit will submit themselves, aimed at clarifying aspects related to the curriculum and the scientific-pedagogical plan, taking into account the general functions assigned to university teachers by article 4 of the ECDU, focusing on the aspects and respective criteria identified below.

4.2. Aspects of the evaluation

Without prejudice to the minimum requirements identified in point 3.4 of this notice, the evaluation of candidates will focus on the following aspects and Project, taking into account the curricular aspects in the disciplinary area for which the competition was opened:

1. Scientific Merit (VMC) – 30%
2. Experience and Pedagogical Merit (VEMP) – 30%
3. Tasks of University Outreach and Economic and Social Enhancement of Knowledge (VTC) - 15%
4. University Management (VGU) – 15%
5. Scientific-Pedagogical Project (PCP) – 10%

4.3. Evaluation criteria

The criteria to be considered in the evaluation of each of the assessment and project aspects identified in the previous point, and the weighting to be assigned to each of them in the final classification, are detailed below, without prejudice to the minimum requirements identified in point 3.4 of this notice, if applicable:

4.3.1. Criteria for assessing the Scientific Merit dimension (VMC) – 30%

4.3.1.1. CMC1 — Scientific production

Quality and quantity of scientific production in the area for which the competition is open (books, journal articles, publications in conference proceedings, conference presentations, etc.) expressed by the number and type of publications, and by the recognition given to it by the scientific community (reflected in the quality of the publication venues and the references made to it by other authors).

4.3.1.2. CMC2 — Coordination and implementation of research projects

Quality and quantity of scientific projects funded on a competitive basis by public funds, through national or international agencies, in which the participant took part, in the area in which the competition is open, and the results obtained in those projects, giving relevance to project coordination. The quality assessment should consider the funding obtained, the level of difficulty of the competition, the degree of involvement in the projects, the evaluations of the projects carried out, and the prototypes developed, particularly if they resulted in products or services.

4.3.1.3. CMC3 — Formation of scientific teams

Ability to generate, organize and lead scientific teams, as well as to guide researchers in post-doctoral, doctoral and master's level work.

4.3.1.4. CMC4 — Intervention in the scientific and professional communities

Capacity for intervention in the scientific and professional communities, expressed, in particular, through collaboration in the editing of journals, the presentation of invited lectures, and participation in academic juries outside the institution itself.

4.3.2. Criteria for evaluation of the Experience and Pedagogic Merit dimension (VEMP) – 30%

4.3.2.1. CMP1 — Coordination of pedagogical projects

Coordination and promotion of new educational projects (e.g., development of new curricular unit programs, creation and coordination of new courses or study programs, etc.) or reform and improvement of existing projects (e.g., reformulation of existing curricular unit programs, participation in the reorganization of existing courses or study programs), implementation of educational projects with an impact on the teaching/learning process, as well as participation in accreditation or certification processes.

4.3.2.2. CMP2 — Production of educational materials

The quality and quantity of teaching materials produced by the candidate, as well as publications of a pedagogical nature in prestigious international journals or conferences

4.3.2.3. CMP3 — Teaching activity

The quality of the teaching activity carried out by the candidate should be assessed, whenever possible, using objective methods based on broad opinion surveys (pedagogical surveys).

4.3.3. Criteria for evaluating the aspect of University Extension Tasks and Economic and Social Valorization of Knowledge dimension (VTC) – 15%

4.3.3.1. CTC1 — Patents, registration and ownership of rights, development of technical standards and legislation

Authorship and co-authorship of patents, particularly those already adopted in industry or services, registration of intellectual property rights over software, mathematical methods, and rules of mental activity. Participation in the drafting of legislative projects and technical standards

4.3.3.2. CTC2 — Consulting services and study and development contracts

Coordination and participation in consulting activities and/or in research and development studies and projects involving the business sector and the public sector. Participation as an expert in panels and evaluation processes of research and technological development (R&D) projects in companies and/or entities of the scientific and technological system (STS). Coordination and participation as a teacher in vocational training or technological specialization courses aimed at companies or the public sector.

The evaluation of this criterion should also take into account the economic value of the research results achieved, measured by the development and technology transfer contracts they generated and the spin-off companies to whose creation they contributed.

4.3.3.3. CTC3 — Science and technology outreach

Coordination and participation in scientific and technological dissemination initiatives with the scientific community (e.g., organizing congresses and conferences) and for diverse audiences. Publications on scientific and technological dissemination.

4.3.4. Criteria for evaluating the University Management dimension (VGU) – 15%

4.3.4.1. VGU — University management activities

The candidate's participation in scientific, pedagogical, or institutional management activities is evaluated, including, in addition to leadership positions in the University's and Faculties' top bodies, the management of courses, research units, departments, and other effective interventions in the planning, launching, organization, and operation of teaching and research services offered by the university. This participation must be supported by reference to meritorious actions developed within its scope.

4.3.5. Criteria for evaluating the Scientific-Pedagogical Project dimension (PCP) – 10%

Strategic plan relating to the lines of research, teaching and university extension in the area of Physics Engineering that the candidate proposes to develop as a Full Professor. A document with a maximum of 10 A4 pages should be submitted.

5. Working methodology of the jury

5.1. Candidates' scores

Each member of the jury makes a reasoned assessment, scoring each candidate in relation to each dimension, on a scale of 0 to 100 points, rounded to the nearest tenth, taking into account the criteria approved for each aspect, with a level of demand adjusted to the category for which the competition is open.

5.2. Public hearing

The jury has the possibility to hold a public hearing under equal circumstances for all candidates approved on absolute merit with the purpose of personally clarifying the evaluation elements contained in the documentation submitted by them.

Should it be necessary to hold these public hearings, they shall take place between the 30th and the 70th day following the deadline for submission of candidacy, and all candidates shall be informed via the Apply platform, at least ten working days in advance, of the date and place where these public hearings shall take place.

5.3. Final Result

The Final Result (RF) for each candidate's assessment by each member of the Jury is calculated using a formula that weights the various components:

RF= (0,30*VMC) + (0,30*VEMP) + (0,15*VTC) + (0,15*VGU) + (0,10*VPCP)

which reflects the weightings associated with each component.

Following the individual reasoned assessment, each member of the Jury draws up their own ranked list of candidates, which they use when voting to reach a decision and determine the final ranking of the candidates in accordance with point 4, without the possibility of a tie between candidates in the final ranking.

4. Jury deliberations

5.4.1. Any resolution will result from article 17, paragraph 12, of the Regulation, applicable by virtue of article 83-A of the ECDU, which determined the approval of the same with a view to the implementation of the rules of that legal diploma, covering the procedural procedure of the competitions, namely the evaluation and final classification system.

Thus, under the terms of article 17, paragraph 12 of the aforementioned Regulation, the jury will deliberate through a roll-call vote based on the selection criteria adopted and disclosed for the approval and ranking of the candidates, with an absolute majority being required for any deliberation, and abstentions are not allowed.

5.4.2. Ranking methodology

In the various votes, each member of the jury must respect his or her ranking list, observing the following in the votes:

1. the first voting round is intended to determine the candidate placed in 1st place, by counting the number of votes that each candidate obtained for that place;
2. if a candidate obtains an absolute majority of the votes for 1st place, he or she is placed in the respective position and removed from the voting rounds and the procedure to choose the candidate for 2nd place begins;
3. if no candidate obtains an absolute majority of the votes for the 1st place, a new voting round begins, only among the candidates who obtained votes for the 1st place, upon removing the least voted candidate in the previous vote for that place;
4. if there is a tie between two or more candidates in the position of the least voted, a tie-breaking vote is held only between them, counting the number of relative first positions of each one, from which the least voted candidate is removed;
5. If a tie still remains between two or more candidates in the position of the least voted, but the number of those candidates has been reduced in relation to the previous voting round, a new tie-breaker vote shall be held only between the candidates tied for the position of the least voted, counting the number of relative first positions of each one, the least voted being removed;
6. if the tie still remains between two or more candidates in the position of the least voted, without the number of candidates tied in the position of the least voted having been reduced, in relation to the previous round of voting, the decision will be made by the quality vote of the President or by a casting vote, according to the situation. The candidate voted for by the President will be included in the subsequent voting round for the same place;
7. if there is a tie when there are only two or more candidates left for the 1st place, the tie-breaker is made through the casting vote of the President of the jury or by the exercise of the tie-breaking vote, as the case may be;
8. Once the candidate for the 1st place is chosen, he leaves the voting process and the selection procedure for the candidate to be placed in 2nd place begins, repeating the process referred to in the previous paragraphs for the subsequent places until a single ordered list of all the candidates is obtained.

6. Submission of applications

6.1. Submission of applications

Candidates must access and register on the electronic platform https://apply.up.pt/ to submit their application, selecting the procedure to which they wish to apply (procedure code: DOCPUB-FEUP-26-17), until the deadline.

To submit an application, the sections available on the Apply UP online platform under “My Application” must be completed.

6.2. Instruction of applications:

The application must be accompanied by the following documents, under penalty of exclusion:

1. Doctorate certificate and certificate of aggregate title, except for cases corresponding to obtaining a PhD degree and/or aggregate title at the University of Porto.
   The opponent to the competition who is selected for the post to be filled and holds a doctoral degree obtained abroad must present the recognition or registration (as applicable) of his or her degree at the time of signing the contract, under the terms of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, under penalty of exclusion;
2. Curriculum Vitae, containing all information relevant to the assessment of the application, as well as demonstrating compliance with the criteria set out in point 3 of this call for applications, organised in accordance with the ranking criteria set out in paragraph 4 of this call for applications, namely information relating to scientific publications from the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science/ or SCOPUS databases, including journal quartiles, journal impact factors and citation indicators, excluding self-citations; the candidate must structure their CV in such a way as to facilitate the rapid and comprehensive identification of their contribution, within the disciplinary area for which the competition is open, under each of the sub-points of point 4;
3. A summary document to accompany the CV, the information in which must be verifiable and contextualised within the main document and other supporting documentation submitted; it must be completed in full, dated and signed, in accordance with the mandatory form available on the Apply platform;
4. Works and evidence of the activities mentioned in the CV submitted, which enable the criteria set out in points 3.4 and 4.3 of this call for applications to be verified and assessed.
   In addition, candidates may highlight in their CV up to ten of these works or activities which they consider most representative of the work they have carried out, stating the reasons for selecting these particular documents;
5. Scientific and pedagogical project, a document in PDF format, with a maximum of 10 A4 pages (Arial font, size 11, 1.5 line spacing and 2.5 cm margins).

6.3. The documents referred to in point 6.2 of this Call for Applications must be submitted via the Apply UP platform in a non-editable PDF format.

6.4. For the purposes of assessing applications, documents accessed via hyperlinks or external storage platforms (drives) will not be considered, with the exception of hyperlinks leading to publications identified by a DOI.

6.5. Failure to comply with the provisions of point 6.1 shall result in the exclusion of the application.

6.6. Failure to submit, or late submission of the documents referred to in paragraphs a) to e) of point 6.2 shall result in the non-admission of the application.

7. Notification of the results and requests for a prior hearing

7.1. The Human Resources Service of the Centre for Common Resources and Services of the University of Porto will notify the candidates of the order of administrative admission or non-admission to the competition, which will be based on compliance or non-compliance with the requirements required in the legislation in force and in paragraph 2 of this notice, and the conditions established regarding the application instruction referred to in paragraph 6.2.

7.2. The candidates who have not been admitted administratively, or have not been approved on absolute merit, as well as candidates who appear on the ranked list of candidates in positions that do not allow them to fill the post announced, may request a prior hearing under the terms of Articles 121 and 122 of the Code of Administrative Procedures (CPA). All candidates are notified of the final resolution approved by the Rector.

7.3. Notifications are made by publication on the Apply UP electronic platform, pursuant to Article 112(1)(c) of the CPA, and take effect pursuant to Article 113 of the CPA. The deadline for candidates to make a written statement is ten working days.

9. Other provisions

Joint Order No. 373/2000, of 31 March, of the Minister for the Reform of the State and Public Administration and the Minister for Equality, determines that the following mention must be made in entrance and access competitions:

"In compliance with Article 9 h) of the Constitution, the Public Administration, as an employer, actively promotes a policy of equal opportunities between men and women in access to employment and professional progression, scrupulously ensuring that any form of discrimination is avoided".

In this sense, the terms "candidate(s)", "teacher(s)" and other similar terms are not used in this notice to refer to the gender of the people.
