Full Professor (W2, Tenure Track W2) in Railway Superstructure at the Faculty of Civil Engineering This is a tenure-track professorship for a five-year term leading to a tenured W2 position. We are inviting applications for the position of full professor in the area of railway superstructure, to be filled as soon as possible. The professorship will be located at the Institute of Transport Science at RWTH Aachen University. Since it will also be part of the "Research Center Railways" and the profile area "Mobility and Transport Engineering" at RWTH Aachen University, the applicant should have a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration and connected, practice-relevant research projects. A professional background in civil or transportation engineering is preferred. Qualified natural scientists with experience in railway superstructure are also explicitly encouraged to apply.
The applicant should cover several of the following areas thematically:
• Railway construction, operation, and maintenance of superstructure for increased reliability and reduced maintenance effort,
• Improved installation techniques for components of railway superstructure,
• Diagnosis and maintenance methods for the infrastructure,
• Development of life cycle models to increase infrastructure availability,
• Modelling and simulation to calculate loads from train movements, environmental influences, or ageing and their impact on the superstructure and substructure.
Experience in digitalization topics such as the application of BIM is advantageous. The education of students is a particular concern for RWTH Aachen University. The new professorship provides an opportunity to design and conduct courses in the field of railway superstructure for the faculty’s German- and English-speaking bachelor’s and master’s programs. The requirements include a doctoral degree and additional research experience, such as a habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) or equivalent achievements gained as a university researcher or professor or in a research position outside academia. Teaching ability and dedication are essential and the application should include proof of this. Fluent German is not required to start the position but the successful candidate will be expected to hold classes in German within the first 5 years. The professorship is endowed by DB InfraGO AG. Cooperation with the sponsor as well as active participation in national and international specialist committees are desired.
