The American University of Kurdistan (AUK) is located in the city of Duhok, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, near the border with Turkey.
The University was founded in 2014, and as stated in its Mission:
AUK is dedicated to preparing future generations of leaders through curricular and co-curricular excellence in an American-style education focusing on transformative knowledge, innovative research, ethical community service, respect for inclusion and diversity, global connectedness, and life-long learning, all aiming to ensure economic, environmental, social, and political advancement- regionally, nationally, and globally.
For the past years, AUK has been focused on developing its infrastructure and building the capacity of its employees as it proceeds through the accreditation process with the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). AUK was granted Candidate for Accreditation status in September 2024. AUK's progress is also evident in a doubling of enrollment since 2021, the introduction of its first master's program (M.Sc. in AI) in fall 2025, and delivery of its community education programming across Kurdistan.
