Detailed Project Description The Disease Ecology Lab in the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Galway is seeking a PhD student for a lab-based project exploring the biodiversity-disease relationship using a well-known model host Daphnia and its parasites. Experiments will aim to understand the feedback loops between parasite-mediated competition, dilution and amplification. The position will be fully funded for four years (a €25000 tax-exempt stipend per annum plus EU-student fees covered by the project grant) by a Research Ireland grant awarded to the PI. Suitable candidates should have at least a B.Sc. in Biology or a related field, proficiency in a range of laboratory techniques, strong attention to detail, communication and organisational skills and an ability to work independently as well as with others.
Living allowance (Stipend): €25000 per annum
University fees: €5750 (covered by the project). Non-EU students may apply for an international fee waiver to make up the difference
Start date: 01/Sept/2026 (flexible)
Academic Entry Requirements: BSc. or M.Sc. (preferred) in Biology, Zoology or related field
