Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)

About the Project

To apply, please click institution website.

In visual neuroscience, early animal studies characterised vision largely as a feedforward, stimulus-driven process.

Advances in human brain imaging now allow us to study mental vision, the brain’s ability to internally generate visual experiences in the absence of sensory input. These internally constructed representations are central not only to perception, but also to higher cognitive functions such as imagination, memory, and mental simulation. We will use laminar functional brain imaging (fMRI) to investigate the cortical microcircuitry underlying the differences between externally driven perception and internally generated imagery, informed by theoretical frameworks such as predictive processing.

We are seeking PhD candidates with a strong background in neuroscience, psychology, physics, engineering, or a related field, and skills in computational analysis (e.g. using Python/MATLAB), neuroimaging, or systems neuroscience. Experience with modelling, signal processing, or programming, and an interest in linking brain circuits to cognition, will be highly advantageous.
