Essential Job Duties:
The General Hospital Veterinary Assistant provides advanced technical support and clinical coordination for the General Hospital Department (GH) within the Randall B. Terry Companion Animal Medical Center (TC). Operating as a central liaison between clinicians, students, and clients, this role ensures seamless communication and high-standard patient care. The incumbent serves as the primary point of contact for patient admissions and is responsible for executing complex clinical procedures, managing varied caseloads, and providing hands-on instruction to veterinary students and house officers in a fast-paced academic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical & Technical Patient Care
- Advanced Nursing: Deliver comprehensive care using a deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology to proactively manage patient comfort and hygiene.
- Technical Procedures: Execute high-level clinical tasks including venipuncture, IV catheter placement (indwelling and short-term), and drug administration (IV, Oral, SQ).
- Specialized Treatments: Manage advanced wound care, bandage applications, and chemotherapy administration with precision.
- Post-Operative Management: Provide intensive monitoring for surgical recovery cases, focusing on vital sign stability and pain management protocols.
- Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 50lbs with our without reasonable accomidations.
Coordination & Communication
- Case Management Liaison: Direct the admissions process and synthesize diagnostic information to provide real-time updates to students, staff, and clinicians.
- Client Relations: Act as a professional and empathetic point of contact for pet owners during patient visitations and updates.
- Internal Service Coordination: Facilitate "internal customer service" by collaborating across hospital departments to streamline patient transitions and consultations.
Instruction & Mentorship
- Clinical Teaching: Supervise and evaluate senior veterinary students, interns, and residents in a clinical setting.
- Skill Development: Provide technical orientation and hands-on instruction regarding hospital protocols and procedural techniques.
Administration & Operations
- Medical Records & Finance: Maintain precise electronic medical records (EMR) and oversee internal billing to ensure all charges and treatments are captured accurately.
- Facility Oversight: Ensure the clinical environment adheres to infectious disease standards and strictly follow OSHA, radiation safety, and EHS protocols.
- Inventory & Equipment: Manage equipment maintenance and ensure procedural stations are fully stocked for daily operations.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

- Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
- Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program.
- Experience as a veterinary Assistant in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
