General Maintenance Mechanic (Multiple Positions)
Position Highlights
The General Maintenance Mechanic performs a wide range of maintenance, repair, and installation duties involving machinery, plumbing, physical structures, electrical wiring and fixtures across university facilities, with a primary focus on HVAC and mechanical systems. This role serves as the first point of contact for facility-related issues, particularly during off-hours, ensuring building systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established standards.
This position requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as need to support operational and business needs.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serves as first-response general maintenance mechanic for building mechanical and HVAC issues, performing initial assessment of equipment condition and identifying obvious causes of failure or malfunction.
- Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on non-refrigerant HVAC and mechanical equipment following established procedures and standards.
- Assists HVAC Mechanics with more complex HVAC system repairs and troubleshooting.
- Performs basic operational checks of assigned building systems and equipment.
- Supports upkeep of specialized equipment by performing scheduled preventive maintenance.
- Monitors assigned building systems for abnormal conditions and documents findings.
- Responds as first-line general maintenance mechanic for facility issues, troubleshooting and resolving routine problems with building components such as plumbing fixtures, doors, and interior finishes.
- Performs basic repairs on plumbing fixtures and escalates issues that require licensed plumbers or major repairs.
- Performs initial checks and minor corrective actions on HVAC-related equipment.
- Assesses service requests to determine when issues can be resolved independently versus when to coordinate and assist with specialized trades.
- Performs scheduled preventive maintenance tasks on assigned building systems and equipment and documents work performed in maintenance systems.
- Maintains accurate records of inspections, repairs, and service needs.
- Safely operates hand tools, power tools, ladders, and material handling equipment.
- Transports materials, supplies, and equipment between shops and work sites using university vehicles.
- Performs routine servicing of tools and equipment.
- Other duties may be assigned.
