General Maintenance Technician
Perform a variety of general skilled work, including but not limited to basic plumbing, air conditioning, electrical, painting, and carpentry skills, for the repair and preventive maintenance of College buildings and facilities (primarily student housing facilities). The employee will receive, prioritize, and respond to service requests and work orders in a timely and efficient manner; oversee outside contractors and vendors; and maintain records of time, materials, and resources in accordance with established procedures. Florida Institute of Technology is a growing, top-ranked university with over 2,000,000 square feet of facilities to maintain. Working hours Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, with occasional overtime. The employee may be required to work alternate shifts or weekends and will be expected to participate in the Facilities Operations On-Call program. Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of building components and systems, including carpentry, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning machinery and components. Responsible for off-campus dormitories.
Responsibilities Include:
- Perform a variety of general skilled and unskilled maintenance, construction, and repair work on buildings, utilities and equipment.
- Expedite routine service requests; work from oral and written instructions and work orders.
- Maintain routine records of related service requests, work orders, and assigned activities. Assist in setting up Preventive Maintenance schedules and documentation.
- Work independently and/or assist other tradesmen by performing unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled duties in other trades areas, as needed.
- Operate a variety of equipment, including forklifts, aerial lifts, backhoes, tractors, compactors, and vehicles. Monitor inventory levels of maintenance and repair supplies; assist with ordering, receiving, and maintaining assigned maintenance supplies. Operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment.
- Organize the maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks; interpret plans, diagrams, blueprints, sketches, specifications, and maintenance manuals; estimate time, material, and equipment requirements for assigned projects.
- Repair, replace, or fabricate articles such as doors, partitions, counters, and furniture; repair and replace hardware; repair floors, walls, ceilings, roofs, and windows; repair wallboard and minor painting as needed. Perform minor plumbing, air conditioning, and electrical repairs, including replacing light bulbs and lenses.
- Emergency preparedness and support as directed. Additional duties as assigned.
- Carry a rotating cellphone for after-hours emergency calls – may be required to work evenings and weekends in an emergency.
Requirements Include:
- High school diploma or GED
- Brevard County plumbing Journeyman's License preferred
- State of Florida driver's license and ability to maintain a good driving record by Florida Tech insurance guidelines
- 30-hour OSHA GI certification (preferred).
- EPA 608 Universal refrigerant recovery certification (preferred).
- Minimum 2-5 years of experience
- Knowledge needed across all trades, to include plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, carpentry, and grounds.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.).
