Position Summary

The Fetal Care & Surgery Center is seeking a Genetic Counselor I to join our growing Fetal Genomics Program in a hybrid clinical role. A unique opportunity to contribute to an exciting and rapidly expanding field - fetal genomics - and to work within nationally recognized institutions at the leading edge of patient care and genomic discovery. They will work closely with fetal surgeons, maternal-fetal medicine physicians, medical geneticists, and pediatric subspecialists across the institution to support individuals and families with known or suspected fetal anomalies or genetic conditions. They will provide comprehensive genetic counseling services, including the collection and interpretation of family histories, genetic risk assessment, patient education, coordination and follow-up of genetic testing, and return of clinical results. The role also includes clinical documentation and participation in multidisciplinary care discussions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for specific genetic conditions based on ultrasound anomalies or prenatal genetic testing. Interprets family history, clinical and genetic findings to predict risk to patient. Obtains and reviews medical, developmental, and family history information as part of diagnostic team. Ascertains needs and agendas of patients/ families. Preparation of patient and family letters and participation in multidisciplinary care discussions. Collaborate closely with fetal surgeons, maternal-fetal medicine physicians, medical geneticists, and pediatric subspecialists across BCH in a highly integrated, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Responds to inquiries related to diagnostic evaluations, hereditary risks, genetic testing, and pregnancy exposures. Participates in communication process and educating families. Provides documentation of evaluation for families, referring physicians, medical record.
  • Provide genetic counseling services and support to any FCSC patient and their unique needs.
  • Maintain high standards of patient care, ensuring compassionate communication and thorough counseling.
  • Discuss prenatal genetic screening and diagnostic testing options including cell-free DNA screening, carrier screening, FISH, karyotype, chromosomal microarray, exome and genome sequencing.
  • Consent for needle-based procedures such as chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis.
  • Facilitate decision-making with families regarding prenatal and postnatal options and interventions for families.
  • Liaise directly with transition teams (prenatal and postnatal providers) and consult teams to ensure a smooth and optimal experience for all patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling

Licensure/ Certifications: MA Genetic Counselor License; Genetic Counselor certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling or from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting. Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
